How to stop cats going on kitchen worktops?

Our kitten (who's 4 and a half months old) jumps up onto the kitchen worktops. We don't want her to do it because it's unhygienic. She has also knocked over a case of flowers (spilling water everywhere) and a potted plant (breaking the pot) that was on the windowsill. We have nowhere else we can put things to keep them out of reach!

Her and her brother aren't allowed outside yet. We're waiting for them to be neutered which is booked for a few weeks' time. So I wonder if they're getting bored of being cooped up. They do have each other to play with, and we play with them too (at least once a day).

I'm at a loss as to what we can do. Would it help to buy one of those tall cat towers for them to climb and play with? I'm worried if we buy it they won't use it and will keep jumping up in the kitchen.

We can't shut them out of the kitchen because it's an open plan kitchen/dining area, with a utility room off the kitchen, and we keep their food and water bowls in the kitchen and their litter trays in the utility room.

I used a spray bottle to keep my cat off the benches in the kitchen. The bottle stays there, in view, as a reminder to him.
It took about 5 or 6 squirts before he got it.
For those who say the cat will probably still go on - I sieve flour occasionally onto the bench tops to check
I've purposely left raw liver there and he still hasn't jumped up. So it can work.

I feed MCat on the work top, otherwise MKitten would steal his food, making MCat sad and angry.

MKitten hasn't found his "springy legs" Grin and waits until I'm crouched down, doing something menial like scooping fecal matter from his tray, then uses my back as a springboard.

I try not to get too angsty over germs - that's my immune system's job.

The old lady jumps up..but she had to for years as Morph nicked her food other wise, so we gave up and fed her on an end bit of the kitchen top..no food prepped there.

The kittens despite being bigger than her now, have not yet realised that they can! Obie tried once, missed and knocked a pan lid down which scared him and Ophie is too chicken to try Grin

However they all sit on the dining table... but there is a strict order!
Old lady Portia is the boss and if she is there..they wait on the floor!
Today they caught me cooking chicken, needless to say I had to do a second lot for our casserole as this lot were not going without....

Loving your cats' nonchalant expressions! Portia lording it over them. Grin
