i need to fit a cat flap to a double glazed window....

is it impossible?

someone dumped 3 stray cats on me and i already have 2....the need for a catflap is now pressing.

im after one of those that work with the microchips. i rang a double glazing firm today who said they could only fit one if i swapped my double glazed panel for a upvc one.

ive seen that they CAN be fitted in glass but ive no idea who to get to do it.
help!

Ignore the window companies. Look for a local person who repairs and reglazes windows. As well as being more accommodating, he probably doesn't employ oily salesmen or bear the cost of the boss's Bentley so should be cheaper.

Because DG units get misty in time and need to be replaced, there is sure to be at least one in your town. Probably your neighbours or window cleaner know one.

If not, look in the Yellow Pages for your local glazing supplier, they will know someone, or will have a board of business cards next to the door. Get one that is faded and has been up for a year or two.

DG units are ordered and made up to size (including thickness, which may vary).

I would be surprised if it cost as much as £100.

I recently had three (small) dg units replaced for £75, though they were made to order they did not have cat holes in. I have seen it done (they also make them with holes for extractor fans).

You could alternatively ask a small builder or plumber to use a core-drill to make a 150mm round hole in a convenient wall. Don't let the cat get too fat.

It can be done, by double glazing companies. As PigletJohn says, go for the small local ones rather than the large multinationals. The cost depends entirely on the size of pane you will need. They have to make a new pane with a hole in it and replace the one you already have (which you can keep if you ever want to swap it back again). If it's half a door, probably around £70 I would think.

I had my one put in my patio doors (picture on profile) and it cost £350 I think. But it's huge.

I have a cat flap in a DG door. The glazier took out the original glass and put in a new pane, which measures 72" x 20", in which he had installed the cat flap. It cost 250 pounds just over two years ago, plus the cost of the flap.

PS - the guy is a sole trader and advertises as a specialist double glazing repairer.

We had the dg firm who fitted original stuff to do a hole for cat flap but they can't do it on the original glass. We've kept original in case we move and buyers don't have cats. Can really recommend
