How to get my cat to stay in more?

Lovely mumsnetters have given me lots of advice about my sociopath ginger tom benjamin. A brief history is that he is fat, very needy/affectionate, likes things on his own terms (repeated run ups at the bedroom door if we shut it, lots of angry shouting if we don't go to bed and get up on time...!)

Over the summer he's been out a lot and he's usually nearby as comes when called at mealtimes. We're sans cat flap and he comes in at 11pm ish for dinner and comes to bed with us and sleeps under the covers

The rest of the time if he is in he is shouting to be let out. He might come home once in 15 hours but shouts if we shut the door. Often he is at the back of the garden but won't come in.

I miss my cat that used to sit on my knee a lot. He is either out or shouting to be out and unsure why HmmSad

Summer - the weather is better and there's lots a-doing out there. Give it a short while and he'll be back on your knee again.

Do you have a cat flap so he can come in when he want? You might find as the weather gets colder he will stay in more? Has he had the snip? Thus usually stops boys roaming as far.

No cat flap and it's been going on since February but got worse in June...
