my house smells like a litter tray :(

We got two beautiful kittend 6 days ago. I love them to bits. They are almost 3 months old. They recived their first injections two days ago.

My house is beginning to smell like a litter tray:( they are very clean and have only had a few accidents since they arrived. These are cleaned up promptly and I change their entire tray daily, but I can smell the tray. I am using aldi litter. Could that be the problam ??

I love them to bits but need to sort the smell issue. I hsve visitors coming today for the first time. My floors are cleaner now than ever before. At the minute I clean them once or twice a day. I don't know what else to do. All advise welcome.

What type is Aldi litter?

What sort of tray do you use?

I use a fullers earth [bentonite?] based clumping litter, the clumping effect makes removal of wees easier than the non clumping type. IME it is the wee that smells more and can linger.

The tray I use is an igloo type, totally covered with a flap entrance, I actually don't have the flap on the entrance as she couldn't get the hang of it when she was tiny, but any odour seems to be contained anyway.

The roof/lid has a black carbon sponge filter thing in, that you change periodically.

A covered tray like this also contains the litter well, nothing gets kicked out.

Its private too, some cats can be funny about being seen when they 'go', its deep too so they can have a good old dig, which they seem to like!

Someone said that this type of tray would be too big for a kitten, but I got mine at 12 weeks old, she was the smallest of the litter but managed with this tray fine.

I use a tray with a lid and put one of those neutralizing air fresheners on a shelf near to it. We have biolet litter which is non clumping and we take out solids daily. We also put the litter really deep in the tray so the cat can bury everything properly. We wash out the tray with water and disinfectant weekly. It rarely smells thank goodness. We've got a ten week old kitten, using a clumping litter in an open tray, and despite scooping out all wee and poo three times a day it still stinks.

Just discovered she's weed behind the sofa again too. Good job she's cute!

i use the wood pellets one from asda as its wood based it smells nicer breaks down to sawdust so easier to scoop out of the tray, what might be happening is though you are wiping the tray the tray itself is absorbing the cat wee smell, i pput my tray in the bath and use the shower to wash it then let it air dry this seems to get rid of the lingering wee smell

I put a bit of white vinegar in the water when I rinse the tray after cleaning it, the vinegar neutralises the smell of cat wee

I also use a clumping litter, Cats Best Oko Plus - it's a brilliant cat litter (although not the cheapest) and the tray hardly ever smells now

The only litter I have used that doesn't smell is Catsan. Recommend it highly!

Aldi is fullers earth.

Try talc scented ultra clumping (but don't happily kiss the cats head thinking he smells scrummy then realise he smells of his litter) or the wood does smell nice.

I find all the clay type litters have a smell. I use the wood pellets stuff.

The best non smelling litter for us is Oko Cats Best. I even managed to persuade my mum to use it with hers and she was always a Tesco pink litter user

I will definitely try the woo pellet litter. I think my biggest problem was not making the litter deep enough. Something I couldn't do in the old tray.

Another vote for Cat's Best (or the same kind by Tigerino, which comes in a slightly smaller bag so takes up less space)

The wee magically forms a little ball which is dead easy to scoop out, & you can flush it (& the poo) down the loo. When you're ready to put a whole fresh lot in (which for me with 3 cats is after about 4 weeks) the remainder after flushing the bits can go in compost/green recycling.

Another vote for cats best oko plus. No smell just clean, fresh litter........but OMG the tracking!!! Looked like a porridge factory had exploded in my front room. Best if your litterbox is a covered one with a flap (or your cat is not a digger!)

Catsan absolutely stank to high heaven. And as for the white dust. No thanks.

After trying loads and crying lots at the mess I have finally found my forever litter. Cats best natures gold. The same make as the oko plus,the same freshness, but big pellets. That bloody stay in the box. Not between kitties toes or on my black sofa. Or the floor. I absolutely love it. No smell at all (and it's in my front room).
It's expensive though,but don't have to change it regularly just sieve the clumps out.

Second best is definitely the wood pellets. Again, no smell and no dusty bits. Only problem is changing it before it turns to sawdust (messy).

Have tried loads of different types and not changing again. Some made me weep upon seeing my living room covered first thing in the morning.
Now I'm happy to greet my darlings instead of wanting to ship them off to the nearest cat shelter.
