I don't need a kitten?

Dontstepinthecowpat · 17/06/2014 13:30

I found a kitten this morning, tiny wee thing in a wide open space. I dropped it in at the vets, they thought it might be wild and are going to phone me later. It's approx 6 weeks.

What will happen to it? Will they check it over?

She'll likely be crossing her legs for a bit with everything being new and may not perform until things are real quiet. First Use of Tray is always anxiety-making, kitten or grown cat so just stay hopeful for a few hours yet. Have you shown her where it is or briefly scrabbled her paws in it to remind her of her duty?

Maybe keep an eye on DS. Although she sounds pretty relaxed about him, there is a slight problem in that if he becomes used to toting her around - well she'll grow so quickly and he might not find it so easy/hold her uncomfortably in a few weeks time. (And then you could get a reaction from her.) Is this his first cat?

Dontstepinthecowpat · 19/06/2014 15:47

Is all our first cat Confused. I've closed the door so she is in there on her own and the kids are in the playroom, the can't open the door to the room she's in it's too stiff so I will keep checking her and she will get loads of attention when they are in bed.

That will be her room for now, I will put a cat flap on the utility room door and her food/litter in there when she is old enough to go outside.

Vet will neuter her around 5 months they said, first vacs in three weeks.

Ah well - you're likely her first humans so you can all have a learning experience together! Smile (And you at least have The Litter Tray.)

isseywithcats · 19/06/2014 17:47

Scarletohello · 20/06/2014 00:28

As sooo glad you kept her! I thought you might. Hope she settles in really well. Please keep us updated and do post lots of pics. Please! ;)

cozietoesie · 20/06/2014 08:33

How did her first night go? (And has she used her tray yet?)

Smile
Dontstepinthecowpat · 20/06/2014 10:12

Yes she used her tray Grin we have a big coat room so I emptied all the wellies and stuff last night and put her basket, scratch post food and litter in she had done a poo and a wee this morning, drank some water and eaten some biscuits. I've put some kitten pate in thus morning and it's been demolished.

She came into living room at night with DH and I and likes to be a neck warmer.

She has meet the dog and they have done a bit of barking and hissing but I think they will be chums eventually

Awww lovely!! Enjoy Smile

cozietoesie · 20/06/2014 10:34

Great stuff. (And most dogs will quickly cede dominance to a cat, even a little one - what kind is it?)

Dontstepinthecowpat · 20/06/2014 10:50

A black lab, he's a big boy but very placid. She was right up at his nose and he was fine, just a bit shouty when she moved suddenly.

I can see why curiosity killed the cat, the are nosy buggers aren't they Shock

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 20/06/2014 11:00

A lab should be easy for her to dominate - he'll just be getting used to the Imp of Satan appearing without warning everywhere.

And yes - they are nosy. If you haven't already done it (and having a toddler and a young 'un you probably already have) now's the time to go round and remove all the Ming vases from anywhere accessible. General kitten proofing is much like toddler proofing except that you have to be much more elastic about your definition of 'accessible'. (Your house will probably be filled with unbelieving cries of 'She got where ?' over the next few weeks.)

You're doing well so far.

Smile

Lovely :)
My brother found a kitten once. We knew where it came from, a family who had too many cats and never spayed them so siblings and parents/children were all breeding with each other. My parents decided we could keep him as he had wandered so far from home - only it turned out my brother had lied about where he had found him! He found him 100yards from the feral cat house and carried him home Blush
By the time we found out he was our cat. Feral cat family found out and tried to steal him back but he made his way back to our house by himself! (Or maybe he didn't...who knows)

Dontstepinthecowpat · 20/06/2014 11:11

Thanks coszie, I'm sure she will slot right into the mad house!

Someone on the local buying and selling fb page has posted kittens that look very similar to Chester, same age for £40. A quick nose shows another litter last year Hmm. I suspect Chester has come from that litter but they are not getting her back, I will keep the £40 toward the cost of having her spayed.

Ehric my DS2 will do that when he's older I'm sure Grin

Dont sounds as though she's settling really well.

Our stray had very sticky eyes this morning and only ate a tiny bit of breakfast. Vets this afternoon so he'll hopefully be able to tell us if she just needs TLC or if there's anything actually wrong with her. Sad

Dontstepinthecowpat · 20/06/2014 11:23

Chablis let us know how you get on, hopefully kitty will be fine and you will have a neck warmer tonight.

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/06/2014 11:24

Oh no, poor little thing. She can't run away before the vets can she? They seem to know when your taking them.

ShouldHaveMarriedTimDowling · 20/06/2014 11:30

dont our lab is at the service of the old cat who was here before him and the kitten that came after.

cozietoesie · 20/06/2014 11:31

Hopefully only a dose of cat flu - although if she's been living rough, the vet might want to run an extra test or two. (She'll likely have worms and fleas in any case as you're aware.)

Best of luck this afternoon.

ShouldHaveMarriedTimDowling · 20/06/2014 11:31

mercy

cozietoesie · 20/06/2014 11:33

dont

That reminds me - did the vet deal with possible parasites that Chester may have acquired?

Dontstepinthecowpat · 20/06/2014 11:47

They don't want to do anything till 9 weeks cozie they think she needs to build up she's a bit on the scrawny side. But the gave her a health check all was well.

Aaaw, I was coming on to say everyone needs a kitten. I got my wee girly at 6 weeks because her poor mum was young & collapsed under the strain of too many litters too soon.

She is just the greatest thing ever & the whole family is besotted. Enjoy Chester, I am sure she will thrive.
