I don't need a kitten?

Dontstepinthecowpat · 17/06/2014 13:30

I found a kitten this morning, tiny wee thing in a wide open space. I dropped it in at the vets, they thought it might be wild and are going to phone me later. It's approx 6 weeks.

What will happen to it? Will they check it over?

Hmmm, I'm wondering if DH would believe me if I said I'd found a kitten. I'm a lousy liar so probably not!

chemenger · 18/06/2014 12:33

I'm thinking that the trick might be to somehow convince DH that he has found a kitten. He'd never believe that I had just happened to come across one..

cozietoesie · 18/06/2014 13:14

You'll need to get the extra litter tray and litter in well in advance if you haven't already got some. They can go in the back of the cupboard and aren't that noticeable. (Kitten food is usually easily available on the day.)

PS - Chablis. No cow's milk for the kit: it's not good for cats even though they mostly love the taste of it. Water and kitten food should see her right. (You're best using a kitten food because it's nutritionally balanced which straight meat or fish from a human plate won't be in the medium to long term.)

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/06/2014 13:41

Chablis please could you offer a dish of water to that kitten? 27c is warm which equals no puddles to drink out of.

It must be exhausted & so lonely.

ChablisChic · 18/06/2014 13:56

Fluffy, yes, she has plenty of water available, and has chosen to lie in the shade. She's very affectionate and, when I sat down near her, came and rubbed herself against my legs, so she's not feral. She miaows pitifully when I come in the house and shut her out, so I think she's decided she'd like to live here, but she's not coming in until she's been to the vets and de-flea'd etc!

I mixed a bit of GoCat with water and let it go soggy and she's now eaten that; I think she's about 4 months, having googled extensively! Do you think she's house-trained? I can't see any evidence of wee or poo near the house so she's obviously gone into the undergrowth (we have large garden with woodland and lots of untamed areas so plenty of room to roam).

ChablisChic · 18/06/2014 13:58

cozie yes I told DH not to give her milk last night but couldn't remember why, so he overruled me! She was starving though and we didn't have a lot else, so it seemed better to give her that than nothing. She certainly enjoyed it.

Fluffycloudland77 · 18/06/2014 14:06

Some people throw kittens out when they are weaned because it costs more to feed them (or they drown them) so it's possible that she knows about litter trays.

kelper · 18/06/2014 14:15

I want to find a kitten!!!! Actually I'd quite like to find my two boys who went missing over the past year, but i don't think that's likely to happen. DH says I'm not allowed any more, he thinks our current cat (a girl) prefers being an only cat.
But if i found one………

cozietoesie · 18/06/2014 14:18

Lactose intolerance is why !

You'll often get away with it in a very young cat because they've not long finished with Mom's milk - and some cats actually aren't lactose intolerant. (My own Seniorboy for one.) But even if you suspect that they're not intolerant (eg no sign of an upset stomach or diarrhoea) it's not good practice. They don't need it even if they like it.

Seniorboy used to steal cold milk if a glass of it was left on the floor by mistake. (He's trained not to go on kitchen surfaces but the floor is fair game in this household.) He likes it but that doesn't mean he's given it.

Sounds like she's after liquid as much as calories so maybe buy a pouch or two of wet kitten food? Some cats don't like dry food much and she may not be used to it.

(Sorry for the hijack, Dont. Looks like this has become the 'stray kitten thread'. Smile)

ChablisChic · 18/06/2014 14:21

Oops yes, sorry Dont. Any decisions made or news from the vet?

DS keeps lifting her for a cuddle, he's 4, she doesn't seem to mind but is this ok?

So far I've confined her to one room, the living room I've put her food, water, litter tray, scratching post in it. The DC don't play in here so it's quite calm. We are getting a new sofa in a few weeks and it's a wooden floor do it's a good room for her to be in.

Should I leave her in there tonight or is it too big a space for her? I will put some blankets in her carrier and leave the lid off as a bed.

Ahh how lovely. I want to find a kitten too

ChablisChic · 19/06/2014 15:07

Oh how lovely. Our little stray is sleeping in the sun on the patio. I have a vet's appointment tomorrow and, if all is OK, she will become part of the family. Do you have a name for her dont?

cozietoesie · 19/06/2014 15:18

Lovely. Was she stiff-legging at something near the floor vase? (She looked to be slightly hackles up in the picture.)

I think DS and she should be OK although maybe he shouldn't be lifting her too much until he can judge whether she's receptive. (Judgment not being something 4 year olds are known for!)

Has she used the litter tray at yours yet?

Smile
cozietoesie · 19/06/2014 15:19

Good luck with your one tomorrow, Chablis.

Smile
Dontstepinthecowpat · 19/06/2014 15:28

Hi cozie she had just arrived home and was hackling at everything, no hissing though just a bit timid. DS is besotted by her, I don't even think the novelty will wear off he is such an animal lover. DS1 will be home from school to meet her soon and I'm trying to keep DD away as she is a toddler and a menace Grin

No litter tray use here yet Grin how often will she wee/poo (just so I know to look under couch)

We have stuck with Chester for her name.

Blithereens · 19/06/2014 15:32

She's adorable and looks very much at home Grin

DH says we can't have a third cat UNLESS we just found one, but I never do! Lucky you guys :) and lucky kitties to have found new home.
