Morning all! I've been trying to encourage my rescue kitty cats to explore the house more but failed to realise that they may like to eat the house plants. It's a dragon tree and I'm not sure if one or both massacred it

Has anyone had experience of this & what should I l

What symptoms should I look out for? I'll be gutted if they became seriously ill

Seek advice from vets immediately. My poor darling cat ate the leafs of Lillie's without my knowledge and they positioned him his whole nervous system shut down and he had kidney failure within a day. Do to know what type of plant it is?

The dragon tree is an evergreen-like plant that varies in size, from a small ornamental plant to a small tree. This plant is part of the Agavaceae family, and contains steroidal saponins which can cause irritation when chewed or ingested. When ingested by dogs and cats, it can result in clinical signs of facial and oral edema (swelling), excessive drooling, vomiting and anorexia.

Ring the vets, they'll have a nurse there 24/7.

Bin the plant.

Thanks everyone for your replies, Tealady your poor pussy cat, is he ok now? Did he recover quickly?

Well it's been 6.5 hours & neither cat has shown any sign of illness as yet. I'm keeping a very close eye on them though. The vet agreed that the plant probably isn't too toxic but to feed the kitties bland food for a few days to help settle any upset tummies.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I feel like such a doofus for not thinking about the house plants (although I did know about lilys).

My cats massacred a dragon tree regularly and never got ill. I'm not saying you should encourage it, but just not to worry too much

We had to have him put to sleep on Christmas Day. He was my autistic sons cat and kept in the house so not at risk of evil neighbours or cars :(

Yes - but lilies are seriously bad news for cats, all parts of the plant being highly poisonous, including the pollen which they might get on their coat if they brush against one and attempt to groom off.

I wish more people, florists in particular, knew not to put lilies in flower arrangements. Unfortunately, they're very showy and long-lasting flowers so from a florist's point of view, probably a staple.

Thanks guys I had no idea they were so dangerous. I had been sent flowers from work for my 30th whilst on Mat leave. I'll never have flowers in my house now x
