Cat interrupting us...

Our rescue cat Benjamin is very lovely but very friendly and forceful and large. He was 4 when we got him and is 6 now and I think whatever problems he had when rescued will be with him for life as he has issues surrounding food and love, is very needy and freaks out when we go upstairs at night even though he eventually follows.

Our house is open pan and so there is no door between the downstairs and upstairs. The only rooms downstairs with doors are the kitchen (TINY, not even big enough for his litter tray), downstairs toilet (tiny) and living room. We don't really want to keep his litter in the living room, and as such he has never been shut in a room downstairs overnight.

For the first few weeks of having him we didn't let him sleep in the bedroom with us. He ripped up the carpet, scratched at the door all night and took run ups to try and knock down the door. We therefore relented and he's slept with us ever since.

However, DP and I would like to having some 'us' time in the bedroom with the bloody cat! We naturally have sex before we go to sleep and so Benjamin is in by then (no cat flap, he comes in for his dinner at about 11pm or whenever the fuck he likes and if we have sex and shut him out of the room we are treated to wailing and door barging, if he's in the room with us he tries to sit on us. [embarrassed]

It's actually a real problem that is upsetting us. Is there anything we can do?!

PS. I know he's massively obese. We're working on it...

Another possibility is that when he's a the neighbours he is getting endless, unadulterated attention from them! Even if they are not feeding him any more they could well be indulging his attention seeking? Either way, the neighbours need to be trained too!

MrsCripps · 25/04/2014 21:04

Tell the neighbours he is in danger due to overfeeding and they must stop or else you will take them to court!
We don't have a cat flap and mine go in and out at set times.
Put him on light/diet cat food - it fills them up .
My porky boy is now sleek and svelte and he doesn't beg anymore.

I have nothing to add to this thread, other than to say that Benjamin is a very beautiful, if 'traditionally built' chap, OP you seem like a lovely owner, and all the cat shrinks are doing a grand job. We have a loving, porky cat who has suddenly taken it a bit far, but I suspect in his case it's some kind of dementia Sad.

Oh, one thing - could you drop leaflets around your neighbours with a 'DO NOT FEED ME' message - pics and description of health ishoos? In a friendly tone, but clear that feeding him is actually not being kind to him.

Update: tonight we went to bed and fed Benjamin before we did. We were lying talking on top of the bed when Benjamin barged in. He was most affronted that we had a throw on the bed (he doesn't like walking on things like that) and went to the bookcase in the bedroom and pulled four books off, got on the shelf and scratched.

Dick.

He's now followed my DP who is brushing his teeth and Benjamin is trying to get on his lap.

I bet your DP deep down loves it as well, eh? It's just hugely gratifying to have a cat obsessing over you even if you demur for the sake of whatever.

Along with the neighbours, I think he's going to be the biggest nut to crack. Ask yourself in the light of day whether he's really capable of being tough to Benjamin or whether you'll be cast as Wicked Witch of the North?
I'll be surprised if it's the former. Pleased - but surprised.

BigPawsBrown · 27/04/2014 00:01

DP has promised to tonight.

Benjamin is currently owning me
