The litter tray

Am beside myself with excitement: it's just possible I've solved my cat pee problems

So our 5-month kitty has weed outside his litter box ever since we brought him home. He faithfully poos in the litter box, but has pretty much weed on every bed in the house; in any bags (e.g. gym bags) left on the floor, and on articles of clothing left lying about.

I've googled endlessly for a solution to the problem. I finally followed up on one suggestion and bought a second litter tray and placed it far from both the litter box he poos in, and from his food. Well he barely waited for me to finish pouring the litter into the new tray before he leaped in and did an extravagant wee. I hadnt even tipped the litter bag back upright yet. It's only one wee in the new box but I am praying that this proves to be a lasting fix.

Had to share my excitement! Please hold thumbs for me.

Have you got a product like 'Urine Off' or 'Rug Dr'. Even if you can't smell his wee because you've scrubbed the area clean, your little kittie sure can. The aforementioned products break down the enzymes in the urine so it no longer is associated as a weeing place.

Also avoid using bleach/vinegar products to clean an area.

I also had a little kitten who just could not get his head around litter trays. The trick I found was to buy a metre wide, food deep bowl and fill it (took three bags!) and then covered it with shredded paper. He recognised the shredded paper as that is what he used before! Over time I was able to get him on a normal tray. Try to find out what he used before.

He will still wee elsewhere if both litter trays have poop in it or more than one or clumps of wee. I clean them out twice a day and do a full change every 5/6 days.

Hello all, sorry so long to report back. My password reset thingy just didn't work. But I'm back to report - cautiously - some potential good news.

Things really have improved since that second litter tray. Kitty's done or two wees outside the box, but that was when DS had a bunch of rowdy friends playing cricket in my living room…I felt like weeing outside the box too at that point! But mostly its all been in the litter tray. He uses both boxes for both weeing and pooing - i.e. he seems to pick one for use on a particular day. Maybe it's that the other box is fresher by the time he pops back…who knows…mysterious cat logic…but praise be it seems to be working!

Thanks for all the support and cat bollocks.

Fingers crossed for you because that sounds like grounds for cautious optimism.

I long ago gave up on trying to understand why Seniorboy used one tray as opposed to another. (I thought once I had the glimmer of a pattern but then realized I was hopelessly wrong.)

Well done the anote household, anyway.

Smile
