Come tell me tales of hope - cat missing

One of my cats has been missing since this morning and I'm not coping at all. It's not like him - he goes out but only for an hour or so at a time. If it was the other cat, I wouldn't be so worried as he will often disappear for lengthy periods. Have been round all the neighbours and he would be hungry by now anyway, so would have returned for food if able. I'm hoping he is shut in a shed somewhere but can't help my mind wander to thoughts of him lying injured somewhere. It's also bloody freezing outside.

I am one of life's copers and in the last few years have had to watch and wait for my husband, mil and sil/best friend to die. While all that was seven shades of shite, I have been knocked for six by my stupid, dim cat not coming home. Dd has gone up to bed and I am sitting here hoping that he will turn up by tomorrow. Hope is a bastard cruel thing isn't it?

Anyway, please tell me your missing-cat-returns-and -everyone - lives- happily - ever -after stories.

Posting here ups your chances a big lot!

He'll have got himself shut in somewhere. Is he chipped?

Doowop · 08/11/2013 22:24

Yes, he's chipped. When I've had cats go missing in the past, I've rung the Council who keep a record of any animals that they've had to dispose of due to road accidents but it's the weekend so not able to do that just now. Not much I can do tonight but will stick some posters up in the morning if the bastard hasn't returned with his tail between his legs.

I really need to get a grip - it's not even been 24 hours.

My lovely Jasper went missing for a week when we were moving house. I'd pretty much given up hope but went back to my old place for one last try - he came back to me starving hungry but fine.

When I was a teen our cat Gypsy went missing. She ended up 3 miles away, and somehow found my then boyfriend who realised who she was.

Big hugs OP, it's bloody terrifying. Flowers

Melissakitkat · 08/11/2013 22:34

Maybe it's good mousing weather and your cat is sitting in a bush watching the leaves. My cats do this - barely leave the house then suddenly disappear! Then turn up either the next day or sometimes a whole week later! If not turned up tomorrow open a can if tuna and smear the juice near the cat flap outside and put the tuna in their bowl inside - the smell will attract them. Also can you lock the cat flap so they can come in but not go out.

Hope they turn up soon. It's such a worry. Hugs.

My original & much loved first cat went missing for 10 days in London (after being a country cat). He came back when I had given up hope - just in time for breakfast as if nothing had happened. Hope he turns upsoon

ParkerTheThief · 08/11/2013 22:38

Our first cat went missing. He was a stray who had turned up and moved in.
We hunted for him for weeks, and put up posters and offered rewards. DH walked for miles and miles scouring the hedges, lanes and ditches
In the end I hoped he had returned to his original owners and was healthy and happy (although he was so scrawny and unloved when he turned up I didn't feel optimistic)
After four weeks we decided to get another cat, I picked up the phone to ring the local animal rescue and looked up to see my cat sat on the windowsill tapping the window with his paw.

It was as if the little sod knew!

MyDogEatsPoop · 08/11/2013 22:43

Are you positive he's outside? I've heard a lot of owners lately thinking the same, and the cat's turned up in the airing cupboard, or under the bed, comfy as you like.
Hope he turns up soon.

Doowop · 09/11/2013 07:42

Thanks for your tales. Parker - that's amazing.

No sign of him so far. Definitely not in the house. I will get some posters printed out this morning and get them stuck up.

Google vets in your area, ring every single one leaving his description & phone the chip company too.

Are his chip details up to date? Phone number correct etc?.

If you have pet insurance some pay for missing posters to be produced.

Our cat was missing for a week, we put posters up, went out searching, called everyone, eventually my neighbour knocked on & said he was wandering around their garden, he'd lost some weight & was very dirty, we think he'd been stuck on someone's garage.
Hope your kitty turns up soon, it is very worrying, I do feel for you xx

Doowop · 09/11/2013 12:07

Thanks to everyone. Unfortunately we found him dead this morning a few houses away. Looks like he's been hit by a car.

Ours goes missing from time to time, once he went for a couple days, I think he got shut in somewhere.

Maybe your cat got spooked by fireworks and is hiding somewhere, or he could be curled up on some old ladies lap ( old people have a habit of feeding other people's cats ).

Marne · 09/11/2013 12:15

So sorry, missed your post Sad poor kitty, so sorry for your loss xxxxx

How awful Doowop. This happened to us almost a year ago and I knew within an hour of him going missing that something was wrong. We too have endured multiple bereavements (Father and FiL) over the last 14 months.

You have my deepest condolences. I can hear how much you loved your cat. Flowers and I felt afraid for you when I read your initial post because of the gut feelings that something had happened.

Not much comfort I know, but you at least know what happened to him and that he is not trapped or in pain somewhere.

I am so sorry. I wish I could do more. xx
