My poor boy

My 13 month old tabby fell into a container of diesel, he's become really ill and my husband has took him to emergency vet. Does anybody know if he is likely to recover from this? We would be heartbroken to lose him

Surely an open container of diesel would

  1. Smell very strongly.
  2. Quickly get contaminated with leaves/detritus and potentially block the pump in any vehicle/machine using it.

People therefore do not leave diesel in open containers.

Can you see the container from your house ?

mrsjrob · 20/09/2013 21:19

I could it was right next to my back door but I had a look out the window upstairs and it is now gone.

My dh and I have decided not to renew our tenancy on the house and just move, it's one of those places where everybody is either related or good friends but we have only been here a year and haven't really been welcomed

Loathe as I am to say it (due to your upheaval and inconvenience) I think you're making the right move. How long have you left on your lease?

cozietoesie · 21/09/2013 09:37

I'd agree - anyone who could (at the very least because they admitted that) leave an open container of diesel around for a cat to 'fall into' isn't going to be too concerned about children roundabout.

Having said which, I'd rain fire and brimstone down upon them thereafter. Legally. But that's just me.

mrsjrob · 21/09/2013 10:06

Hi I only have 2 months on my lease, I am not too bothered about moving, this house never really felt like home

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 21/09/2013 10:23

You should be fine then - and not too long to keep Whitey inside. You'll doubtless be alerting your landlord to the problems?

mrsjrob · 21/09/2013 11:16

I will speak to landlord again. I have already mentioned it to him when we first moved in he said to me that he was made aware that there were problems with next door by previous tenants, apparently the man next door would knock on the door of the lady that lived here (alone) and ask her inappropriate questions and try to Invite himself in Confused

The biggest issue we had with them was he told my kids they couldn't run about in their own garden because it upset his dogs (2 rotweillers) I told him where to go

That same night he had been drinking, took his dogs out for a walk but fell over and lost them. We were having a bbq in the garden when he came round and found one of the dogs in his garden, he kicked the dog in the face and unfortunately I went mad and started screaming and shouting at him.dh called SPCA but we never did find out what happened.

He's a nasty piece of work all round isn't he? I cannot stand animal cruelty.

I'd move if I was you and you can afford to do so. No wonder it never felt like home.

cozietoesie · 21/09/2013 11:36

Sounds to me as if his business is well due for a nice little VAT audit by HMRC. Say in about 3-4 months time.

thecatneuterer · 21/09/2013 11:47

In your position I would certainly move, and I would tell the Landlord why. It's great that he was happy to rent to people with cats (so many landlords seem to be inexplicably arsey about it), but in this case he really shouldn't in future.

thecatneuterer · 21/09/2013 11:48

Ha ha cozie. Yes my preferred form of revenge is generally HMRC-related too:)

mrsjrob · 22/09/2013 20:07

Another update, my poor boy has got worse he has to be pts in the morning, we are heartbroken but will spend the night giving him lots of hugs.

I don't know how I'm going to cope taking him to the vet in the morning but I know it's the best thing for him now

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 22/09/2013 20:09

oh my god. I'm so sorry!

Sparklingbrook · 22/09/2013 20:12

Oh mrsjrob, I am so, so sorry. Poor Whitey. Sad

ExitPursuedByADragon · 22/09/2013 20:12

Why tomorrow? Why not immediately ?

iwantanafternoonnap · 22/09/2013 20:24

Oh I am so sorry and I really think you need to go to the police x

mrsjrob · 22/09/2013 20:24

They gave him strong pain medication and sent him home to spend his last night

OP posts:
ThisIsBULLSHIT · 22/09/2013 20:26

No?! Why what has happened? How awful x

ThisIsBULLSHIT · 22/09/2013 20:26

I mean what else has happened to make him get worse, I know what happened to start with. Sad

ExitPursuedByADragon · 22/09/2013 20:29

How odd

ratbagcatbag · 22/09/2013 20:30

Big big hugs, hope his last night is peaceful.

I would also go to police and then ring hmrc like others have suggested.

hellymelly · 22/09/2013 20:37

Oh NO! I am so sorry, has he been poisoned by the diesel? I am really sad for you, such a young cat and such a horrible thing to happen. I am wishing karma to act on your neighbour [ angry]. Hope you are ok tomorrow, I'm sure all on the thread will be thinking of you, it is dreadful saying goodbye to a loved pet. Is there really no hope at all now?

Cybercat · 22/09/2013 20:38

I am so so sorry its come to this. Ive lost 2 cats this year so I freshly remember how it feels. If he is pain though are you being fair by waiting until tomorrow? I guess the vet would have advised otherwise if they werent happy.

I did think it sounded very unlikely that a healthy cat could convieniently fall off a fence into an open container of diesel. Id be considering moving too after all you have said.

Apologies for the typos and hope you are ok.

MILLYMOLLYMANDYMAX · 22/09/2013 20:55

Heartbroken for you and your poor little boy.

As a landlord I feel a duty of care to people who rent from me. I recently had a problem with a neighbour of one of my properties. A stern letter from a solicitor stating that if another tenant left because of his behaviour I would be coming after him for the rental income I lost between tenancies and costs. My current tenant has not heard a thing from him since.
I would definitely set HMRC , the VAT man , the police and your landlord and the RSPCA on him.
Horrible, horrible man.

MILLYMOLLYMANDYMAX · 22/09/2013 20:57

Oh and environmental health and the planning department.
