HELP! Garage have found a tiny KITTEN under my bonnet!

Took car in for service this morning and garage phoned to say they'd lifted the bonnet & found a tiny tiny kitten...After recovering from the shock I walked over to pick it up & it's absolutely tiny - maybe 5 weeks? Eyes are open...All I've managed to establish so far is it's male - white with tabby patches - it's hungry and it's covered in fleas! We are a cat-loving household & have 2 very geriatric cats, hadn't bargained on a kitten at all but have to admit it's very cute. But I'm clueless about kittens - 18 years since I had one! Have given it a bit of chicken/ham food for adult cats, which it devoured, and phoned the vet, but what else should I do?

He should be named 'Clarkson'. Grin Or Jenson.

Oh yes, call him Stig.

Here, Stiggy, Stiggy...

DH says he doesn't think we can keep it Sad

I know all the reasons why he says that, and my head does agree that he's right (although I do want to keep it!), but he has conceded that we need to look after it for at least a little while as all the rescues around here are totally full and it needs lots of care as it's so little

Maybe I'll be able to persuade him

Are they all really practical reasons too tim?

Could you offer to foster him for the Cats Protection League until they find a suitable home? They will help with costs if that's a barrier.

keep him! keep him!

he'll come round, they always do .. ;)

my DP was very against us getting 2 kittens last year and wouldn't go near them. last night they were all asleep on the sofa in their normal position - one on his stomach and one on his head!

One of the concerns is possibly the 2 geriatric cats who wouldn't be thrilled presumably.....

don't be too thorough with the flea comb, get the lives ones out leave some flea dirt in until you have seen the vet. If kitty is that riddled with fleas he may be anaemic - leaving the dirt in the fur will give him the chance of re-ingesting some of the lost iron.

Hahaha! Your DH has no chance! Grin
My DP did this with our pup when he was born a bit crooked! "He can stay for a while"... That was 5 years ago! Grin
Mark my words, little Stig will be staying! Wink

aw, what a lovely surprise! Wish MN would hurry up and sort out the profile pics issue. Shame about dh but I wonder how he will feel after several weeks of fostering... your other cats may be OK as he's a kitten, and pet insurance is cheap for kittens. Grin

yes Sparkling we have 17 & 18 yr old cats already, the 17 yr old is going blind & the 18 yr old has failing kidneys, the blind one gets really upset if strangers come in (and wees on the carpet) so I think a new kitten would probably give the same result! We were also thinking that once the 2 old ones both died, we would have some cat-free months to go on holiday before taking on more pet responsibilities (haven't been away as a family for more than a weekend for 2 yrs because of complicated cat requirements). Also the kids are still very young and I think it would be a very noisy household for such a tiny animal, they are pretty good with the older cats however....

Don't worry timtam. DH may change his mind after a few weeks of fostering. Even if he doesn't, though, or the two oldies take against the kitten big time, if you manage to raise him to - say - 10 weeks old, you'll have done a very good deed and given him a real chance at life.

Everybody knows I would love a kitten but I know for a fact Sparkling Cat would not. The reason she was at CP is she didn't get on with the cat she was rehomed with.
She is very territorial with the neighbourhood cats too.

I just couldn't do it to her.

Bet you'd love to try though?

Yes, a teeny bit of me thinks it might be ok, but i would never forgive myself if it didn't. Sparkling Cat comes first.

The lady over the road has a 12 week old kitten so I am getting my fix. Smile

Methinks if you can't keep Stig of the PumpGrin then you won't be short of the Envy takers here...

It's Sparkling Cat's fault Tree. Stroppy madam that she is.

Well if Stig is staying for a short time anyway, maybe introduce him to the other cats and see what happens. You may be surprised! My friend has an ancient, cantankerous temperamental old dog. She recently rescued a new youngster. The d boy has a new lease of life! You may find that he slots right in after a week or two. And he won't be tiny forever.

When the day comes that it's right for you all, Sparkling, you'll know - because your kitten will arrive in some manner.

Well, the vet agrees that the kitten's male, he says it's probably about 7 weeks old, checked him over & he's healthy, gave him a good squirt of spray to kill the remaining fleas and says he will need 1st vaccinations in about 2 weeks!

Local cat rescue says they're completely full to the rafters but if we really can't keep him they will probably be able to take him in a couple of weeks

DH is officially "tolerating" the kitten but I caught him chatting to it & trying to coax it out of the cat carrier Grin

Ooh I want to find a kitten in my car.
We had a cat called Stig (long before Top Gear thank god). He generally got called Stigbert or Stiggywiggywoo. It's a fine name for a cat.
