The litter tray

HELP! Garage have found a tiny KITTEN under my bonnet!

Took car in for service this morning and garage phoned to say they'd lifted the bonnet & found a tiny tiny kitten...After recovering from the shock I walked over to pick it up & it's absolutely tiny - maybe 5 weeks? Eyes are open...All I've managed to establish so far is it's male - white with tabby patches - it's hungry and it's covered in fleas! We are a cat-loving household & have 2 very geriatric cats, hadn't bargained on a kitten at all but have to admit it's very cute. But I'm clueless about kittens - 18 years since I had one! Have given it a bit of chicken/ham food for adult cats, which it devoured, and phoned the vet, but what else should I do?

Sparkling I'm not sure if he'll be upset by this but we think we will try him in the cat carrier overnight at the mo (it's a very large one so plenty of space) - just until the others get more used to him being around - we have to leave all the doors open for the other 2 to roam around, and we can't change things around too much because the blind one would get really disorientated & upset if he walked into closed doors. Also we don't want him upstairs around the beds until we're convinced all the fleas are dead & gone!

Also from long-ago kitten experience he would probably get himself wedged into somewhere unsuitable overnight, he has already been eyeing the chimney (it's blocked up, but I'm sure he would find somewhere equally kitten-unfriendly)

He's dashing around at the moment so will probably be very tired, he's had a busy day (understatement!)

That's a great idea. How will it work with the litter tray though?

I think it will be a set the alarm for 3 in the morning job Sparkling.

Talking of which - has he used his tray yet ?

Errr, not sure Sparkling...he has been scratching around in it this evening, I think we'll have to take a chance that he'll use the tray before bedtime - if he squeaks I'll probably hear him as the DCs often wake up in the night as well. We have a small house and there's no way of shutting him or the other cats into their own "wing"!

See how it goes then. Your blind cat is the complication if they're used to open doors everywhere.

I added another better pic to my profile - taken this afternoon once he'd settled in a bit & was cleaned up & partially deflead - he really is cute even if I do say so myself! He's wreaking havoc just now, I'd forgotten how kittens are into absolutely everything as soon as your back's turned.

Sooo beautiful!!!

He looks full of himself. Smile

With his colouring, you'll be able to spot any remaining fleas real easily if eg they dance round the neck - as they tend to in my experience.

Have you put way any valuable nick nacks yet?

cozie the house has been childproofed for the last few years - they are climbers so everything is packed away or moved up high - hopefully also kitten-proof!

He's going for the computer flexes though, which is worrying DH (who is permanently attached to his computer)

I've seen some guidance on that (flexes). Give me 2.

\link{http://www.wikihow.com/Keep-Cats-from-Chewing-on-Electric-Cords-and-Chargers\Here} you go. The guidance is US so the photos will be of US electrical sockets but the principles are sound I think. Basically, it's just good practice - which DH should be following anyway, particularly with kids in the house.

You might not have a chewer though. Kittens are into everything that moves - and most of the things that don't! - and he'll be full of surplus energy after his ordeal and rescue and lots of food.

timtam23 · 19/08/2013 22:55

Thanks cozie, we do most of that already for the kids, DH is just a bit lazy with a few of his things - he's said he'll reform for the sake of the kitten!

Kittens are into everything that moves

Even 6 yo FatCat can't resist a moving charger lead or length of wool that's being crocheted with and he is, apparently, far too grown up for that kind of thing.

Dudley is gorgeous :)

He is so cute.

Arthur used to climb into warm car engines, my dad once took his car for a service and the engine was covered with white hair.
