Our cat was killed today by a neighbours dog.

We live in a country village and have 2 cats. We had them chipped and spayed and decided to let them outdoors, only a handful of cars pass through here every day, there are neighbouring cats, we are rural, a relatively safe enviroment we thought.

I willl never forgive myself now, as the younger who was only 8 months old wandered into a neighbouring garden and was attacked (her neck was broken) and killed by their dog. They are upset too.

It's been a very difficult day. The house is too quiet and our other cat is being very quiet. We are trying to give her lots of cuddles, I'm not sure how cats grieve if at all.

The breed of cat we have is better suited to company. I just don't know what to do. I know longer feel that it would be an option to let out the other cat out again. I would fear for her.

We are supposed to be going to a neighbouring house for drinks soon and these neighbours will be there. I told my OH that I can't go and pretend everything is ok for a whole even

My neighbours brought round flowers and a card which they left at the door. I know they are upset too

You'd feel awful though if your pet killed another pet.

If it was my dog it would be muzzeld in the garden from now on.

'I'm a lifelong cat owner and had never considered that dogs were a risk before I read this, I'd only ever heard of cats being killed by the hunt. '

My dad ended up with 10 stitches after trying to separate a neighbour's dog from their cat. They'd lived together for a couple of years, then something went wrong and the dog attacked the cat. The neighbour was screaming and yelling, but the dog took no notice.
Dad doesn't even like cats. but was very upset that he failed to save this one.

I am very sorry about the loss of your cat. I have lost 2 cats very young, one on the road and the other to a heart attack. It is so sad.

I did not previously think of a dog as a serious threat to a cat. Well not a family dog. How can it be so when so many people have both ? So I would wonder about the other dog. Maybe a farm / rural dog is different.

Last week I saw a neighbours dog go for a cat. The dog is normally on a lead, but this time was going straight from house to car and wasn't. Luckily the owner had full control of the dog by calling him. The dog sat straight down in the road looking sheepish once the owner yelled at him. I was tempted to run after the cat to protect her.
