This looks cute [http://www.amazon.co.uk/Happypet%C2%AE-CAT007-2-Scratcher-Scratching-medium-sized/dp/B00AIL3SSM/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_3 here] but that cat looks like a kitten in the picture and I don't want to splash out on one that will be useless in a year's time. How long do these things last normally, please?

Don't buy scratching posts to save your furniture or expect a cat to use them, they won't ime.
If you want to buy a climbing frame/tower/habitat get the largest you have room for, a kitten from about 10 weeks will soon shimmy up it.
I like to use Zooplus they have a wide selection.

Italiangreyhound · 23/05/2013 19:11

Thanks Iseeall Zoo plus look great but they seem quite pricey. If it is not for the cat to use and it doesn't save the furniture, what is the point of them? Our furniture is actually worth less than some of the cat trees so not sure I can afford them. I wonder if I can make one!

Cats like to climb, jump etc and if they are indoor cat/s they need lots of toys and stimulation, when they are zooming around this in when climbing frames come in useful.
My cats have several scratching posts but prefer the sofas or the divan part of my bed(my cats are indoor cats) I do try to clip their nails regularly.
I'm sure some cats use them as scratching posts, mine are just spoilt.
I'm not sure about diy climbing frames but i'm sure its worth a try

I bought a cat tree for 50 quid new off ebay. Rrp for something similar is about 120.

Mine sleep in the cat tree, but favoured scratching areas are my newly painted walls, back of the sofa, doormat, and my legs.

hugoagogo · 24/05/2013 22:24

My cat scratched the sofa once-we bought a basic pets at home scratching post for £9.99 and she hasn't touched the sofa since.

She needs a new one pretty regularly, but it's loads cheaper than sofas.

Saying that though my previous cat ignored the scratching post we bought her and destroyed the armchair.

Hi cat-lovers, you may remember me popping on here with numerous questions about ow to pick a cat or kitten and how to insure them and what to buy for them!

Just wanted to tell you my fears that our kitten might be shy or not friendly were unfounded. He is purring like a train and jumping on my lap. he is so gorgeous and I will put a photo or two on mumsnet as soon as I can work how to do it.

He is lovely and me and DD are smitten.

Thanks for all your help.
