What's the friendliest breed of cat?

TuttiFrutti · 11/12/2012 19:40

We've only ever had moggies but have always admired the look of exotic breeds. We are thinking vaguely of getting two kittens this time round, but they would have to get on with our dc aged 5 and 7, and we'd prefer friendly cats which wanted to sit on our laps/be with us/play with us in the evenings. We've had some moggies like that and some which were very stand-offish.

Preferably not too mad either, I don't really want the sort of cats that climb up the curtains, although maybe that's inevitable with kittens?

Is there any breed anyone can recommend?

Oh you'll find homes for them FTR. You haven't really started trying yet have you?

Have DH's shipmates made any offers?

PS - I'd reckon beginning Feb if you can put up with them for that long. That few extra weeks will make all the difference to them.

Came to say Bengals and have been beaten to it! Mine follow me everywhere and 'talk' to me, fantastic with the DS' too.

I've put an advert on my works intranet noticeboard and only had one email Hmm I've also asked every single person I know and even some I don't l know well! DH is not based on a ship and is only part of a pretty small team so he only has one person interested too.
If I don't find homes for them in January I would rather keep them a bit longer than them go to a shelter, there's also the option of an advert on gumtree or similar but I'm loathe to go down that route unless absolutely necessary.

I reckon we can get into gear in a few weeks. You'll find, I think, that most people will be concentrating on Xmas now and would put off any thought of a new addition to the family until that's done and dusted. Don't get despondent. We'll get homes for them.

Like its my problem! Hmph he won't even be here in February, he'll be at sea! Grrrr
I'm sure the might on MN can find 7 good homes Smile

I have a siberian.

One of the largest breeds. Similar size and fluffiness to a maine coone and known for being low allergy which is an added bonus.

But the best thing about them is their dog like tendancies. They follow you round the house, beg for food - we have taught ours to sit. They always have to be where you are. If we are on the sofa ours has to be snuggled up right inbetween us. If friends come round he comes and stands right in the centre of us all. He likes to be involved. He is so soft and cuddly. The best Cat I have ever had.

Plus they are an quite unusual breed which makes them even more special.
Downside is a lot of grooming and malting but he is so worth it. Would definitely reccomend.

I love my ragdolls, but they can be very clingy and dislike being separated from their humans. I like that personally, but I suppose it can be cloying. Ive always wanted a snowshoe after admiring one at a friend's house, and somali have those fabulous tails and are meant to have a wonderful personality.

I think you know when you meet the right cat, they just get to you.

FTR's found a home for at least two of them with me! :o

Oh excellent! Half Siamese, beautiful and with a bit of good yeoman stock to steady them? You won't look back LadyofWinterfell.

FTR - if you've upped their backsides yet, might be a good idea to let us know what she's got in terms of male/female etc.

I keep looking at them, thankfully I am too far away, I have 3 cats, 2 have attitude problems, well maybe one and one making one worse! I love kittens though, easy to tell apart, (even if I did have to take 3 boys to the vet and even he didn't know) girls have | and a . under boys have :

That's not altogether reassuring, Not. (With regard to his clinical expertise.)

Tell me about it. I was breeding and had a waiting list so was very eager to tell people news but nope, he said 'too young to tell', I know now after another 4 or 5 litters this is not true, you just have to do it right away and it's quite easy to tell the difference, most of the time.

I will admit one the 3 boys did look different but he was a huge kitten so looked bigger everywhere, I changed Vet anyway, he was useless in many other ways, local but useless!

I've 2 girls (1 black and 1 tabby) and 5 boys (1 black and 4 tabby)
The 2 black ones are twins, they were born last attached to the same placenta, the boy is the largest in the litter and his twin is the smallest Smile

Maybe, she's under house arrest for the foreseeable future!!
The kittens are no freely roaming the house as I've given up trying to contain them Hmm

I keep looking at them Xmas Grin I loved it when they became mobile, so much fun, okay so my leather suite is more than 'distressed' as it was advertised but all good fun.

Any curtain climbers yet? they were my favourite kittens they would get to top and look down and panic!! I miss having a house full of kittens.

No curtain climbers yet, luckily my curtains don't reach the floor and the kitties haven't managed to climb on the furniture yet!
I'm trying very hard not to get attached to any of them but they keep confusing me with their cute little faces and their big blue eyes Hmm
I'm going to try and get some new photos taken over the weekend, howeve they do seem to have taken up residence under my Christmas try so it depends if they ever venture out into the big wide world living room Grin

Siamese, mine wants to be so close to me all the time that I could carry him on my head all day Grin

They're like dogs, mine even fetches. Honestly they are the most wonderful, friendlier cats in the world Smile

Just to check, FTR.

If anyone's interested (for mid-late January) are they OK just to send you an initial message on the board?

Aww they are gorgeous, I would probably take one but mine have flue, so it's unfair to bring any more animals in just now. I also have 3 cats Xmas Grin

I am sure they will venture out from under the tree soon and start climbing the furniture, mines were like rock climbers, I could almost here their laws go in and out of the couch.

I love kittens, so much fun. Some of mine used to run up my legs too, okay I may have encourages them by wearing jeans and patting my thighs and saying 'come on you can do it' Xmas Hmm

My 3 cats are all in here just now which is unusual they usually split up I have on in front of the TV, one looking out the window and one on a coffee table! 2 weeks ago I would have hid 2, but its fine now, I have permission for them.

I hope you find good homes for them. I will look forward to new pictures, that's a game in itself as they get older, I found taking them when they slept worked!
