cat is hungry and keeps asking for food but then won't eat. ideas?

She is 12 and always been fond of eating.
She had a couple of cancerous lumps removed a month ago and seemed fine since.

But now she won't eat more than a couple of bites at a time and is losing weight.

Tried her on about 20 different foods, she ate some fish yesterday but today is wailing for food but sniffs it and looks at me like I am poisoning her.

Ideas?

Vet I think first of all. But my cat is also a right PITA like this - miaows like he is being starved then looks at the food in a Fuck Off fashion and strolls off again. A hundred times a day.

But weight is stable and he does eat when I'm not looking.

Possibly overactive thyroid? Mum's old cat had that and used to wail for food the whole time. His coat started to look really out of condition and he was losing weight.

Damn. Between her and the dog I've been at the vet ever other week for a couple of months.

Can they smell the food? one of my old cats stopped eating when she had a cancer in her nasal cavity.

Bad teeth?

She has eaten a decent amount of supper. And chicken for pudding.
