Female, 2weeks old, eyes just opened, very squarwky, has had a bottle/seen vet/peed upon tummy rubbing...

Now what ?

Oh, and she is called Lilly.

vid here, she really is so tiny that I am a bit nervous about breaking her during feedings and elimination stimulation.

You need Pinot. She handraised orphan kittens.

AngryFeet · 06/08/2012 19:57

Squeeeee! Sorry can't help but that kitty is so cute!

fastweb · 06/08/2012 19:58

Fluffy - I've done a shout put for Pinot on chat, fingers crossed she sees it.

Angryfeet - oh she is so very very cute (but LOUD), really want her to make it.

Someone in chat said pinots not here.

I'm sure you wont break her, how are you keeping her warm?

fastweb · 06/08/2012 20:44

we are kangerooing her mainly, on bare chest skin, with a blankie on top. Which is very sticky given that it is about 35 degrees.

She also has a lined box with a borrowed soft toythat she lies on, with a blankie on top. But she has escaped from the box twice already.

How something so small can travel so fast (vertically) is astounding.

I am taking her to bed with me for the nightfeeds. So I need to find taller box or she'll end up absailing up the curtains ...or something.

fastweb · 07/08/2012 05:39

well that was a fun night.

Like having a newborn.

And I managed to get a poo out of her this morning, so that's good.

She is a real escape artist. Wobbly kitty crawl at the speed of light when she wants to be elsewhere.

Being woken up for a feed. No sound. So your ears are safe ( :

And she did her first BIG poo!

Yay!!

What's her story fastweb? Where's the errant Mother and how did you come to take her in?

cozietoesie · 07/08/2012 08:36

Sounding good, fastweb.

You'll not 'break' her. Frequent feeds, stimulation and cleaning and keep her warm and she should be fine.

Smile

PS - if you can find or borrow a hottie with a fur cover, that's often good. (Only medium water temperature.) A medium sized furry teddy bear to clutch round might also help. (You'll need some sleep also!)

It seems like (yet another) case of person not spaying their cat...and then chucking the kittens away when they discover them. My son's friend found her slap bang in the middle of the church car park. They left her yelling for a good half hourtosee if mum would arrive, but nada...and she was right in the sunso theycouldn't hold off any longer. Sothey picked herup and DS's mate's mum rang me in a right state, took her to the vet, got the kitty formula and bottles (and human baby meat...as advised by the vet...but I am a bit dubious about that...this is the country where the ped wanted my six week old baby on a diet and said he had to have tea instead of milk...so I tend to be a bit leery about taking medical advice at face value) and ran her over to me on the basis that I already have 7 cats (all formerly abandoned kittens, but not this young by a long chalk) so therefore know what to do.

Vet says she is healthy, but it is always a bit of a gamble with kitties this young, some jut don't make it. Sad

I am so worried I'd screw it up and hinder rather than help her progress.

The internet is useless. Full of people contradicting each other and leaving me all confused.

She weighs 180 g, according to some sites that is fine, according to others it is terribly underwieght.

One fairly serious looking site said 17ml for each 100g she weighs,so I'll make a note to see if she manages that much today.

She doesn't want to be on a scedual of feeding, she wants to be fed on demand. Not sure how to convince her that the websites are right and she's doing it wrong.

OP posts:
fastweb · 07/08/2012 09:51

Duetoher ability to scale hieghts she is nowin a kitty cage, with one hugesoft butterfly toythatfills the whole floor. A naked winnie the poo (she is curled under his armpit. And her bunny lovely so she doesn't bump into the door.

With acover ontopof the cage.

Of course nowI'm worried she'll overheat, it is is forty degrees ish. I've half closed the shuttersso the room doesn't get too hot. And she can wriggle out of winne's clutches if she get too stuffy. Does that sound ok?

cozietoesie · 07/08/2012 09:52

Fed on demand is pretty well how Mom would do it in the wild. (If she was there and until she got really fed up!) They feed, they evacuate, they sleep, and repeat....

You'll not get much sleep for a few weeks.

fastweb · 07/08/2012 09:53

I noticed that last night. She is quite noisy for such a tiny scrap of a bit of fluff Grin

OP posts:
fastweb · 07/08/2012 10:00

Here she is getting wieghed.

I look like crap. Due to somebody (who may be small, black and white with a pink nose) keeping me up half the night.

cozietoesie · 07/08/2012 10:00

Forty degrees Centigrade? Blimey. Where do you live ? That sounds a bit too hot for her to my thinking. I'd be a bit happier with 30-32 for a short while and then a little lower. Others may have more experience though so wait for more replies.

I'd also be trying to kangaroo her/keep her close to you as much as possible for socialisation reasons as well as her comfort. If she's scooting off, that may be down to looking for food right now at her age. in 4 weeks time, of course, it will be 'kitten exploring' - and then you're in trouble! Grin

cozietoesie · 07/08/2012 10:08

PS - have you named her yet?

OTheHugeHammerThrower · 07/08/2012 10:09

Pinot is on holiday at the moment, but take a look at her thread in Classics, there might be something there to help?

I livein the most humid armpit of northern Italy.

I've justchecked the room, with the shutters almost closed but windows open it is 31 degrees...still curled up in the crook of winnie's arm she is. So small, so impossibly cute.

I had no idea what a rat race sterilzing bottles is.

I am looking forward to 4weeks plus naughtyness, at least that is territory I know. Althpugh I reserve the right to change my mind and whinge when (hopefully, if all goes well, fingers crossed, amd toes) she is driving me batty by getting in to everything.

I'm keeping all the other animals away for now, worried they might eat her. They should get used to her scent being on me I think (I have never smelled more intersting to the collective zoo) so it'll be less of a huge shock tothem when she comes downstairs in a few weeks.

Well that is my cunning plan anyway.

Right, must clean house for impending birthday party this afternoon..in between feeds, botty rubbing and cuddles. Much coffee self perscribed.

And SQUEEEEE!!! at the kitten videos.

I love a good kitten rearing thread, me Smile

fastweb · 07/08/2012 10:16

She is called Lilly.

Noy sure why, but DS was most decisive. It suits her somehow.

It's very hard to resist the urge to go andpeek at her to make sure she is alive, but I guess the more she conserves energy by sleeping the better it is for her chances, right ?

I will go hunt Pinot's thread, it must be packed with info. Now why didn't i think of that ? (sleep deprivation probably Grin )

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 07/08/2012 10:17

31 sounds better to me but, as I said, wait for more replies. (She'll be acclimatized to a degree so it's better than if she was an Alaskan cat but they need not to get too hot or too cold.) Humid is good for a kitten, by and large, as long as it's not excessive. Prevents dehydration.

You're doing good there. She looks well.

Smile
fastweb · 07/08/2012 10:19

I think I prefer the kitten rearing threads when somebody else has their heart in their mouth day and night.

I know one of Pinot's kitties didn't make it, and I feel a bit jittery.

Oh she is so blimming cute. Wonder if her nose with stay that lovely pink.

OTheHugeHammerThrower · 07/08/2012 10:23

The kitten Pinot list was much younger than yours (only a couple if days iirc), and the runt of the litter with a badly injured leg. Your Lilly, on the other hand, looks pretty hearty to me
