The litter tray

How many times a day do you feed your cat?

I'm still a bit confused about this. We have had our cat for about 5 months, we got her from CP but have never had cats before so it's all new to me. She's got a good appetite and I give her 3 pouches of Felix food per day, spread out over the day. So breakfast, lunch and dinner I suppose. Plus dry food in between.

But when we left her at the cattery for a few days, they said they feed their cats twice a day. So what's the right thing to do or does it just depend on the cat?

She's just under a year old btw.

I tend to feed her when she miaows for it. We probably get through 2 1/2 pouches a day.

The lady over the road has set mealtimes for her cats. Smile

I don't think there is a right or wrong as long as the cat isn't getting overweight or underweight. The cattery probably have to do 2 meals a day as it's their routine.

My kitten is 7 months old...and doesn't eat that much at all? Is that ok? Confused

She has 1 and a half to 2 pouches a day....2 being quite rare. She does graze on her dry food which is constantly available.

She is only small and doesn't cry for food at all except the ham in my sandwich

She even snubs tuna!

Is she ok or just a fussy bitch cat?

Labootin · 08/05/2012 09:52

Twice a day is pretty normal I think as long as the cat has access to fresh water.

seeker · 08/05/2012 09:52

I feed ours when they ask. Otherwise they dig their claws into my bottom when I am standing at the sink.

tabulahrasa · 08/05/2012 09:53

Mine are fed four times a day and theres dry food always down as well, but that's because of a medical condition.

I used to just leave the bowl full of dry food out and gave then half a pouch the odd morning.

Labootin · 08/05/2012 09:54

I had to ban dh from feeding our cat as he feeds them if they so much as or look at him

I went away for a week and came back to a monster

I have two cats but cannot type.

I think younger kittens need more smaller meals per day but as they get older it tends to settle into a routine. My cats have meat morning and evening which they tend to wolf down, and dry biscuits in between which they pick at when they want. A tin seems to last 3 meals/6 portions (no pouches here, I like my bank balance too much!)

SecretSquirrels · 08/05/2012 12:55

My 8 month old has a felix pouch morning and evening and a dish of dry food which he picks at when he wants, I top up the dry food once a day.
Kitten used to tell us that he needed feeding at lunch time as well but we have got wise to it.

I think they are supposed to have kitten food up to a year as it has higher calories for growth.
I've never seen tinned kitten food - will look out for it. I'm sure dry food would be cheaper but it seems so unappetising.

My 2 grown up cats are fed morning and early evening, but they always have water (and never biscuits because the vet has banned it for the boy cat due to his urinary tract problems).

ripsisherethecheekycunt · 08/05/2012 13:34

Mt two boys have a scoop between them morning and night. They sit at the cupboard where it's kept and tap the door.
Ginge tries to open it, but he is too feeble. The drawers next to my bed are a different matter. He often gets in and can't get back out.

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 08/05/2012 13:37

ours have dried food.
they had 4 meals a day to start with (guided by blue cross when we got them)
then we dropped lunch and do breakfast 8am tea 5pm supper 11-12pm
they do not have access to food all day as we have a greedy older cat who would snaffle it all.

Lizcat · 08/05/2012 17:24

My two regular cats have two meals a day, if I fed them every time they miaowed they would be the size of houses. My new cat who crossed my path at the weekend eats all day, but then she is rearing five kittens and has been through a terrible ordeal.

whomovedmychocolate · 08/05/2012 17:26

Too fecking often.

MadameChinLegs · 08/05/2012 17:30

Mine eat only dry, so we put fresh dry into two little bowls at the start of every day.

MadameChinLegs · 08/05/2012 17:30

Should add, we use a laudry powder scoop to fill each bowl, so "two scoops". Left out all day.

PigletJohn · 08/05/2012 17:32

Cats tell you they're hungry and haven't been fed. They lie.

If you feed them twice a day they will get used to it. The more you give in the more they will demand.

Fresh water always available.

bruffin · 08/05/2012 17:37

Twice a day
Dry food in morning and a secret for tea

JustFab · 08/05/2012 17:37

When I first got FABCat I would give her breakfast, lunch and tea but now she gets breakfast, tea and bedtime biscuits Grin.

FABCat is a touch over weight - due to being neutured imo - and it may cause future problems as she has arthritis so I would caution against feeding too much.

I think some pouches say to feed 4 a day Shock but of course they want to sell loads..

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 08/05/2012 17:38

wet food when she asks
dry food is down all the time for grazing
she is, according to the vet, a perfect build

Dancergirl · 08/05/2012 19:56

Thanks all. Think I will start doing 2 pouches a day, morning and evening...with dry food in between.

I get really annoyed when friends say they never leave water out for their cats as they never drink it. Water should always be left out. Some cats don't drink a lot but they should still have access to it especially if they are fed on dry food.

MrsCornish · 09/05/2012 00:12

i have a drinking fountain that looks like a urinal for my cat! hideous but effective.

readyforno2 · 09/05/2012 00:20

My cat will not drink from a bowl so I have to leave the tap dripping in the bathroom, it's infuriating (probably going to be flamed for wasting water)
He's also extremely fussy and will not eat wet food in jelly, it has to be gravy. He usually has 2 pouches a day and grazes on biscuits

MrsCornish · 09/05/2012 00:23

readyforno2 i did that too until i discovered the urinal fountain!
