How many times a day do you feed your cat?

I'm still a bit confused about this. We have had our cat for about 5 months, we got her from CP but have never had cats before so it's all new to me. She's got a good appetite and I give her 3 pouches of Felix food per day, spread out over the day. So breakfast, lunch and dinner I suppose. Plus dry food in between.

But when we left her at the cattery for a few days, they said they feed their cats twice a day. So what's the right thing to do or does it just depend on the cat?

She's just under a year old btw.

Where did you get it? What's it called?

MrsCornish · 09/05/2012 00:32

it is this monstrosity (although mine is white). you can get cheaper ones, but i needed a very heavy one as my cat knocked his regular water bowl over all the time.

readyforno2 · 09/05/2012 00:43

It really does look like a urinal..
Thanks!

MNP · 09/05/2012 01:06

Our 2 get a pouch between them in the morning, 3 different bowls of biscuits and water fountain topped up daily and at tea time a can of encore or thrive between them and finally half a Bozita tetra pack between them at bedtime. 9m old Greek cat is still growing and is already an impressive +6.5kgs and without to much effort can reach 83cms up the wall after flies :o

shoegal34 · 09/05/2012 08:49

ShoeCat gets three pouches of wetfood - morning, dinner, supper - free access to biscuits and fresh water which she badly touches. She is a fussy little b*gger tho and usually won't eat same flavour twice in row. I find supper time feed really works for me because she goes to sleep straight after and doesn't cry in the night for food!

I have one of [[http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Mate-06039-Cat-Fountain/dp/B001NYGB8W/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1336550182&sr=8-2 these] Cat Mates, which is liked by my cats.

I am going to get my two to read this when they wake up! It will be good for them to realise how indulged they are.

sashh · 09/05/2012 09:19

Mine gets a bowl of dried food on the morning, she grazes all day. She occasionally gets a pouch as a treat. This morning I had kippers for breakfast, there was too much so she got a kipper.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2012 09:51

I read that as 'dried fruit' sashh. Grin

mrs2cats · 09/05/2012 10:04

We have dried food always available and then the cats each get a pouch of wet food in the evening. We also have a small water fountain.

Not sure all our answers are really helping. Looks like we all feed our cats differently Smile.

DameHermione · 09/05/2012 10:07

big cats get tinned and crunchies morning and evening.

FatCat then asks for snacks every time someone goes in the kitchen.

FeralCat helps herself to mice, voles and other small rodents

Kitten is on about 8 meals a day, adds up to about 2 pouches.

CrackersandCheese · 09/05/2012 10:14

Our cat gets half a tin split twice a day and about a tablespoon of biscuits before bed. She's a right porker though, so am being really careful with this. Used to leave out lots of biscuits for her. Not now. Always have water out.

We just got a kitten and she's having 1 pouch split four times a day and kitten milk.

I'm going to see how she gets on with that. I really think I overfed the cat when she was little and now it will take time to get her back to a healthy weight. My vet told me off for following the guidelines on the pouches as they really encourage over-feeding, apparently.

MrsPnut · 09/05/2012 10:25

Our cat is always crying for food. She gets dry food in the morning and a pouch in the evening but she will eat that and then try asking for more. We went through a stage of feeding her when she wanted food but it caused so many problems.

She's overweight and is starting to have trouble jumping up onto walls so we have to be very strict. She hangs about under the table during meal times to eat anything dropped onto the floor. It's like having a dog.

ragged · 09/05/2012 10:55

8.5 month old kits.
Last 2 months, set meal times, fed twice a day, not counting birds/mice* & other bits scavenged.
Feed = 2 sachets of Sainsbury wet kitten in morning, and 2 saucerfuls of IAMS dried food in evening.

May I tag on questions, What brands do you all feed your cats? And did everyone keep giving kitten food to their cats up to 12 months, when did you switch to Adult food?

*Technically, Cat 1 catches mice & Cat 2 eats them. Cat2 is constantly prowling for food & will eat potatoes, porridge, snatch off our plates, all sorts.
I am very concerned about obesity (ample example next door).

JustFab · 09/05/2012 12:58

My cat is so fussy and is currently turning her nose up at Waitrose wet sachets having eaten then for 3 days Grin. She will eat them again in a few weeks no doubt. She also has some Tiger pouches but I buy any brand really except for the cheapie stuff. She has senior food when I remember to chose that - she is 17.9 but I find there isn't as much choice.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 09/05/2012 13:07

Mine have one sachet of food each in the morning and in the evening

They are usually fed at the same time each day except for weekends when it's late because we slob in bed

I never leave food down for them because I read somewhere years ago that if they are left to graze whenever they want they never get really hungry and it can make them fussy.

Sometimes, but not often they won't turn up for a meal, usually the meal after I have discovered the remains of some murdered critter.

I don't always call them if they are not in for their meal, they sometimes turn up a couple of hours later and shout rudely at me till I give in

Mainly Bozita wet with the last box of whiskas and a mix of go cat and iams biscuits.

bitofcheese · 09/05/2012 19:39

when it comes to the wet pouhes, my cat seems to love licking the gravy/jelly off and then leaves the chunks the way dd leaves her veg :)

SecretNutellaFix · 09/05/2012 19:41

Mine get their food put down once a day.

They are on a fully dry diet for senior cats and they have an occasional tin/pouch.

I do try to feed them at the same time each day if possible.

nothinglefttolose · 09/05/2012 20:25

Two sachets a day plus dry food left in bowl...but he self serves from natures buffet throughout the day mice rabbits etc.

6 years old 15ibs Maine Coon

Geranium3 · 10/05/2012 21:48

mine seem to think there is a neon sign in the kitchen that in kitty language says "cafe open 24hours"!!!!

SecretSquirrels · 11/05/2012 10:23

ragged I would be interested to know whether it's really necessary to keep on with the kitten food.
Kittensquirrel doesn't seem to eat as much as he used to. I don't know whether he is eating creatures outside but he hasn't brought any in. I know he prefers the dirty pond water to his bowl of clean water Grin
