He was only 3. He was fine and sitting up washing himself one minute and the dead on the floor the next.

So sad, have to tell the children when they get back from school.

Feel really sad for his sister now too, she has just a search for him. If only we could talk to cats and explain!

:(

Oh I'm so sorry Sad

Have you let his sister see/sniff his body? Apparently it helps them to accept that they're gone.

belgo · 03/02/2011 13:08

Sorry to hear this. I agree, let his sister see him.

idobelieveinfairies · 03/02/2011 13:10

Oh no i didn't, i didn't think. It was such a shock, i called DP from work (not far away) and he took him to the shelter. His sister sleeps all day upstairs so she didn't see anything.

I have bought some tuna to cheer her up though.

Sad How awful, big (non mn) hugs. It must have been a shock for you, so hard telling dc about a death, I get so emotional.

thebountymuncher · 03/02/2011 19:11

My thoughts are with you. I just had a new kitten to replace my old cat who had to be put down and he had a seizure and went blind and also had to be put down so I know what you are going through.

ilovesprouts · 07/02/2011 16:12

well my dd got 2 from the same litter so shes still got the sister cat

purpleknittingmum · 07/02/2011 20:30

Thanks for your kind thoughts, and sorry to hear of others losing their cats Sad

The children were very sad, but it was nice to talk about cat heaven and them jumping around on the white fluffy clouds!!! I am just thankful that this happened after i got back from the school run and not whilst the children were here.

Sister cat has been calling for him at night, but her personality is changing quite a lot too, and for the better.

Her brother cat was such a character and loved all the children and would follow them everywhere, but Lottie (girl cat) is now taking over that roll. She is being so much more sociable and she seemed like such a nervous cat before and we thought she just had that type of personality but i am beginning to thing the our male cat had been a bit too bossy.

So it is very sad to lose our cat being so young aswell, but on the brighter side it looks like Lottie will be fine and perhaps happier?? Is this a common thing do you know??

Justanamee · 08/02/2011 19:56

Sad condolences

Have you any idea why he died?
Had he had all his jabs and stuff?
My kids would be devastated if one of ours died suddenly.

I'm so sorry, very sad Sad. Something similar happened to my mum's cat. He was about 8 yrs old, one minute he was playing and then he yowled and died immediately. The only consolation was that under these circumstances it seems he was enjoying himself and not in any discomfort until the last moment which is a lot better than long pain and suffering. I suspected it may have been an embolism.

Just like you say, my mum's female cat who was very timid and antisocial became a lot more friendly after the "top cat" passed away. I think it's very common. Cats seem to have a pecking order and the underdog (undercat?!) who is left behind seems to gain confidence when the dynamic changes.
