Our boy is 7 and has recently developed itchy flaky skin. Food is royal canin. Is on anti-inflammatories, gets omega oils and a pre/probiotic. Vet has him on 2 antibacterial shampoos a week. He’s still itchy! Any ideas?

It can be a sign of cushings disease. If it hasn't already been ruled out, have a google and see if he has any of the other symptoms.

Sorry, I've got a bit of a cushings obsession at the moment for my own reasons. Think it's unlikely to be that. Just nothing worse than knowing there's something up with your dog and not knowing what it is! Good luck.

Assuming not anything requiring blood tests then grain free diet and fish oil is the only thing that I find works for my itchy labs. Not sure if Royal canin is grain free already, but worth checking. And don't assume that dog food fed for years is the same composition... we found the manufacturer's do change them periodically depending on overall cost of raw materials.

Thank you, it has been ruled out.

My Lab was really itchy on Royal Canin. Swapped to a salmon and rice food and fine now. Currently Skinners Field and Trial S&R.

Definitely could be the food. Dogs can develop allergies years later, my Labrador has a chicken allergy (very common in dogs) itching and makes her smell bad. It wouldn't harm looking into an hypoallergenic dog food, with a different protein sorce.
