Dog has broken a claw, is this something a vet should see?

The dog has broken her claw on her front foot. She has very long claws, about 1.5cm and has broken about 4/5mm off the tip. The broken bit is still sort of hanging on and I can see the pink flesh. She won't let me touch it to clean it. Is this a vet appointment or will she be ok with licking it herself?

It sounds as if someone should tidy it up a bit and perhaps give an antibiotic injection. If she was mine I'd take her in tomorrow.

I think it would be worth taking her to the vet. As well as cleaning it up, they could trim the other nails. It sounds like it is their length that has lead to the breakage?

This would get a dunk in a bowl of salty water, sudocrem and vet wrap bandage on in our house.
I apply the same rules for dogs as humans, I’d not go to the doctors for this.

Purplecatshopaholic · 28/09/2026 21:49

I’d take her to the vet, yes. She might need antibiotics, and I’d just want her checked out. While there I’d get the other claws looked at in case they are a bit too long.

Ylvamoon · 28/09/2026 21:52

Is or was it bleeding? Is it painful?
If the answer is yes, go and see the vet as these can be a bugger to heal or worse if the nail bed gets infected it can grow back deformed or split leading to lifelong problems. (Obviously worst case scenario!)
More importantly, get your dogs claws clipped regularly so the quick can recede to minimise future injuries. This can be done by a groomer, vet or DIY.

Yes, I think they would need to trim the broken nail (this can hurt a lot) and clean the flesh and put a bandage on it.

RockLobsterRockLobster · 28/09/2026 22:02

Yes, if she won’t let you touch it it must be painful for her. She might need an antibiotic injection too. My dog often snaps his dew claw, and I take him in to get it cut down, checked over and cleaned.

We will take her in tomorrow. We've just had so many vet bills recently!! None of which were covered by insurance.....

She's got an appointment at the groomers next week where she also gets her claws done so this is pretty much the longest they get. She has black claws which I'm wary about cutting as you can't see the quick....

£80 quid later and the vet couldn't even look at her toe she was making such a fuss. We've been sent away with pain killers and just to keep an eye on the nail. Unreal.

Keep it clean, get some salty water on it.

Yep, that's all we can do!

I did work experience at a vet (decades ago) and I remember watching an operation on a dog that involved a broken claw. I can’t remember exactly what they did though. Might be worth a visit to the vets incase there’s a risk of infection.

AlphaApple · 29/09/2026 19:52

£80 is a lot for just a look. I paid £56 for a broken claw removal and antibiotics.

We are really limited with vets where we are so they have us over a barrel tbh.

She did get a teeny bottle of pain killers.

Ddog1 snapped her claw last year and had the quick showing vets advice was cone for shame for 2 weeks
Id let her chew off any part of the nail that's bothering her but once that's removed definitely salt water bathing and making them wear the cone of shame for a few days at least so they don't keep nothing the wound
