Dog breed recommendations for a family with pets

Looking for dog breed recommendations please.

Our family:

• child age 8
• older dog (small lurcher cross)
• 2 cats
• mid level active house - two walks off lead a day at park
• garden
• Preferably small or medium sized. No giants.

At the moment asking for recommendations for a puppy to suit our family best. Although we may look at adopting.

Labrador!

They are a consideration but slightly larger than I was hoping for.

We met a golden retriever - cocker spaniel cross recently. Soooo lovely ❤️

Incredibly unethical to breed that cross, @AlwaysAFaithful. No one who cares about their dog would do that.

Miniature poodle, or a cocker spaniel, OP. Or indeed another lurcher?

Poodle is a possibility
also Italian greyhound cross
or something else lurcher

Just concerned that we got lucky with our lurcher … we will need to be able to train next pup to also live with the cats

We've had two lurchers and 3 other sight hounds. We also have always had multiple cats and multiple children. I think it is Kent greyhound rescue that has really thorough guidelines for introducing. I'm solidly camp sight hounds. They are just perfect in my eyes.

I have a toy poodle and 5 cats and they all get on really well.
my poodle is just the best wee dog - really friendly with humans and dogs and easy to train.

Havanese is the best dog breed ever, they are so easily trained and good with children, don’t shed, are so lovely and are of course absolutely gorgeous. They have a lovely temperament are a brilliant family dog.

But they are very expensive and hard to find also. Good luck x

If you want low maintenance, I'd recommend a greyhound

Had a rescue growing up … adored him but, he would have ripped a cat into a million pieces if given the chance

English Springer Spaniel - I’m on my 4th. Fabulous dogs - big hearts - room for everyone. Mine all knew outside was where to be mad and settled when indoors. All rescues of one kind or another.

Poodle (not poodle crosses), absolutely wonderful dogs

Yes can be hard to get that out of them . They can mellow as they get older but it's definitely an issue if you'd want a youngish child to be able to walk one.

If you are not to bothered about coat care get a Tibetan Terrier.

Funny, easy going and the total opposite of your lurcher.

Whippet from a pup can live with a cat.

Yes our dog is a whippet/bedlington cross. I love her so much and she’s an angel with our cats. She puts up with them so well. Her need to protect our family overrides her prey drive. Despite her going after squirrels, foxes and other cats. I am just worried that we’ve ‘got lucky’. I’m so scared we’ll get one that I won’t be able to train the innate chase out of. But maybe I’m over thinking it/paranoid?

Border terrier ,got our first one when my son was 8 .
Was the best dog ever ,loved our son ,took part in all the activities could walk across a battlefield of toy soldier and not knock one over 😀.
We had cats small animals and he loved them all .Even his recall was pretty good
Now on our 4th one

What about a pure Bedlington?
