Fussy eating in elderly dog

My BT is almost 14.
she always ate a mixed diet of dry and wet food and would eat any brand o gave her.
As she got older she went off dry food I thought maybe it was too much on older teeth and gums.
She has become so fussy. I give her wet food only twice a day.
One day she will eat a bowlful
of whatever I give her, the next day won’t touch it. I’ve tried cheap supermarket own brands right up
to the expensive Lily kitchen. I am fed up
of throwing food away. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

I'd take her for a vet check.

I think it would be worth a vet check to rule out anything medical that could be affecting her.

It could just be that she losing appetite with age. Things like cooked fish or chicken with rice or scrambled eggs can sometimes help to get them eating, also making sure the food is at room temperature or slightly warmed, adding bone broth can help too. Grated cheese sprinkled on is another trick.

Yes grated cheese or cooked peas can sometimes tempt her. I’ll get the vet to check her and try some of your suggestions, she would eat chicken all
day long

My girl is 13 so in the same age range, she too has grown quite fussy. Fussy with dog food and will turn her nose up even at lily k at £3+ a tin !
But with ordinary food I.e anything of my plate she’s quite happy. Thankfully (touchwood) her stomach is quite good and she seems to do happily on my lefts overs yesterday she had the dregs of the carbonara. Sausages always go down well and are my go to if she’s not eating well, roasts, chicken etc
I do always add some of her biscuits into a least one of her meals a day, that means she gets her boring biscuits which are good quality pro plan with something tasty.
Have a look a prokolin on Amazon, I was recommended it by the vets years ago and always have it in the cupboard, it’s a good probiotic that nips upset stomachs in the bud and is good for general health.

Have you tried doing smaller meals more often? L

My old boy is 13, and had an awful gastric bug earlier this summer. It's taken months to try and get his appetite back. He's not fussed on kibble at all, so he's on a mix of scrambled egg or turkey mince with lilys kitchen foil trays. I do put some kibble on it but it's hit and miss whether he eats it.... and if he's not eaten well for a few days, I'll cook him some sausages from the butcher which tempts him.

He's on medication for heart failure, so the vet suggested 3 or 4 small meals a day rather than one or two large ones. That seems to work well for it. But it's like elderly humans, very common for appetite to diminish with age.

My dog recently took a shine to Lily’s Kitchen after a lifetime of kibble. Thankfully, after a couple of months he’s gone off it and now likes something half the price from Asda!

More protein and smaller dishes maybe
