Holiday with dog to Europe - AHC/pet passport

I’m just at the finding out stage of taking my dog to mainland europe for school holidays and the cost of the AHC is something else! Within our town the price has varied from £250 to £350, this is for the paperwork only. If you do three trips a year it quickly adds up! The one receptionist I spoke to said the pet passport may be coming back, they were hoping for this autumn. Does anybody have any info about this? Grateful for any insights and tips x

Google says a pet passport has been agreed in principle, but it won't be out until sometime in 2027.

Shop around for your AHC, we get an AHC for £100 for two dogs.

There's a lot of specialist providers who will charge around 80-100

Take a look at the Facebook group ‘AHC - Animal Health Certificate UK’ - very informative & recommendations of vets to do AHC, & also another page ‘Map of Recommended Vets for Worming Treatment’ for return worming treatment. We go several times a year & pay £99 for our AHC with a local online provider. You usually complete a form they send you, send copies of vaccination cards & rabies vaccine info, & they agree a meeting place with you to hand over paperwork- need to take dog to meeting as they need to scan chip. We use the tunnel as dog stats in vehicle with you so less stressful for them but it’s more expensive than ferry. Happy to answer any questions if I can

I was also going to say shop around. I took my dog abroad last year and it wasn’t anywhere near that.

She had to have rabies before we went and we had to see a vet a couple if days before we came home for medication. Think it was worming or something.

Definitely look at AHC Facebook group and shop around. We got ours for £100 within a couple of days of applying.

If you're in the South/West, PassPets do it for £99 and are excellent - you get your vet to send them some info and the appointment takes 10 mins. Otherwise shop around as pp suggested- I think some vets don't want to do it so they charge ridiculous prices.

We use Pet Travel Pass who are Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire (pick up near J26 or J27 of the M1)
