Catastrophic spleen rupture.

My dog died on Sunday from a catastrophic spleen rupture.
He was gone in 14 minutes!!!!
I am so heartbroken.

We both walked out of the house to the car.
I lifted him inside and drove to the park à couple of hundred yards down the road.
His spleen ruptured while he was in the car.
I opened the boot and saw urine leakage. I lifted him out but he couldn’t move, very unsteady and then fell on the ground.

i immediately drove back to my house.
He was still conscious when I picked him up but when I got to the front door, his eyes were closed and he was unconscious.

I placed him on the bed in the hallway.

Two minutes later, his air hunger breathing stopped, his head flopped and legs stiffened. He was gone.

I am so heartbroken.
From thr moment we walked out of the house together to him being dead was 14 minutes.

He was diagnosed as having an enlarged spleen 8 weeks ago.
Him being 13 yrs old and how risky surgery is and that he was still full of life, I decided on the steroid route.
I thought I had longer.
Not eight weeks.

He was a big softie.
A wonderful boy who listened to his daddy and his elder brother who is half his size was the top dog.
We did so many things together, he was my shadow.

Oh, I am so sorry for your loss, that is so quick - I’m not surprised you need some time to process, sending you a huge hug.

I'm so sorry you have lost your beloved dog. It's so hard when they've been a part of your family and life for so long. I hope you can take comfort that you were there with him at the end.

So sorry. Our boy had a spleen tumour and died in a few hours from a rupture. It’s shocking and horrid. Only had a few weeks from diagnosis - really feel for you @MarcoPoloCX xx

First,of course sending love and sympathy 💕. We had this, border collie, she was 12, I took her and my other BC to a well known big forest. They got out of the car, ran, she stopped dead, keeled over like a log, I went and checked her,her eyes were open and glazed over. I thought she was dead, wondered how on earth I would get her back to the car. She got up and walked back to the car, she'd never done that before. I took her straight to our vet. They did a CT, asked if I wanted to see it. I said I couldn't see any internal organs. They said abdominal cavity was filled with blood, she had liver secondaries. They said she would be dead in an hour, I had her PTS straight away..DH said we should have tried operating, but it's extremely unlikely she would have survived . It was such a shock,I have since spoken to others who have had this, and 2 people with horses.. it was almost 18 years ago, my DD came with me and was pregnant with her first,I clearly remember the date.

I guess you were able to take your dog to the vets and PTS?

It happened so quickly that he was gone before I got through to the vets on the phone.

I was starting a new job the next day.
My vet doesnt open on a Sunday.
It all happened at around 7am.
The crematorium that I always wanted and planned to take him to, their phone line doesnt open until 10am.
For several hours I was stressing what to do.
Luckily the crematorium had emergency appointment available and I was able to drive there and take my dog.

Oh @MarcoPoloCX you’ll be feeling traumatised and very raw I imagine. Take your time.

We called the vet in actually (was about 8am) and they were brilliant, we knew he was going - and he was petrified of the vet surgery for no reason at all his entire life, so we wanted him to go at home. xx
