Help - want my dog to grow up!

Apologies, I tend to be a thread reader and not so often a contributor, but I do keep up with all the posts about your pups.

Today I am here to beg someone to tell me when I can hope that Lavenderdog might group up into the sweet, biddable, well trained dog, she very occasionally shows me she can be!

I’m done with the defiant, bitey, shouty teenager she is every single evening and large parts of the day. Crate training seems to have disappeared, she stares at me and barks incessantly when I crate her. She’s been taught the stop command but that doesn’t work anymore. She counter surfs - doesn’t get food as don’t leave any out, but steals everything and anything.

It was going so well, I was so smug 😭
Anyone want a 15 month old gobby, bitey thug of a schnauzer?! She’s very pretty and lovely to anyone who isn’t me ….

Same, seven month old cockapoo taken against the crate, discovered barking, forgotten recall, loves to steal things and hates to give them back 😭

I have 2. My oldest is very well behaved but will not do anything more than twice. He just gives me a look as if to say ‘do I look like a performing monkey?’

my younger one is 19m and has become a bit of a terror on walks so lots of training.

they’re clever dogs so easy to train but they can be so stubborn.

how is she getting on the counters!

BeardySchnauzer · 05/08/2026 22:16

Also, aren’t you obliged to post a photo? One of her counter surfing would be good!!

Sleepytimepleaseee · 05/08/2026 22:18

I had a Standard Schnauzer. He was the brightest, most stubborn dog I've ever had. Drove an incredibly hard bargain in all negotiations. Stayed a gobby shite all his life.

I think partly it's the breed, but my other dogs (collies, spaniels, labs, GDDs, lurchers and staffies) have all become much better company by two years old.

Lavenderdog · 05/08/2026 22:19

She’s a standard schnauzer so tall enough to reach and very good at using her feet to get hold of anything I should have put away!
I have to do a quick check every time I leave the room.

Warning of a boast ahead..
I taught my dpuppy to Sit Quiet..
And she does.

Tbf she's only 9 months.

And its been a frankly bloody awful 7 months!
Probably won't last will it ??

Lavenderdog · 05/08/2026 22:20

@Sleepytimepleaseee

Nope 😅 I'd definitely consider a Giant though, but I swear Standards are a totally different kettle of fish. I've never known a breed so good at cost-benefit analysis - they weigh up every single damn thing that is asked of them!

Oh my sweet summer child 😂

BeardySchnauzer · 05/08/2026 22:28

Well definitely need a photo of a standard!

my older one is quite big for a mini but my little one is ‘petite’. Always love it when we meet a standard or a giant

(when we were getting the second we did consider a giant purely to freak our older one out as it got bigger and bigger - but decided that probably wasn’t a good reason!)

stubbornness is hard to deal with - mine aren’t particularly good motivated either so it can be a challenge!!

Sleepytimepleaseee · 05/08/2026 22:32

Here's my old Standard - no digital photos in those days! Just look at the wild wild eyes 😂 absolute nutter
