Vet says no toys or chews for week after surgery - help please!

I have a 10 month old miniature dachshund. She had to get a couple of baby teeth removed yesterday, but the vet said that she is not allowed any chews or toys for a week until her gums heal up. No kibble or hard food. I feel so guilty as she loves her toys and her chews. We are also restricted with regards to outdoor activity as she is on heat, and we live in Glasgow where the forecast is wind and rain for the next week (she is a diva and will not entertain going outside in such conditions!).

I have prepared a licky mat for her which she wasn't crazy about (Yogurt, banana and strawberries - all of which she likes).

Does anyone have any ideas please for how I can entertain her for a week? I feel so sad for her - she was so confused when I took all her toys away yesterday.

I give mine Kongs filled with tuna and yoghurt mix and frozen.
Would she find pate more appealing on a licky mat? Or tinned dog food?

I book private dog fields a couple of times a week when my dogs are in season. Is there one near you that you could go to if the weather is nice?

Yes i would give kongs, to keep her brain active.i freeze liki matts usually with yoghurt and some soaked kibble

Great idea, but I don't think she is allowed songs as she will chew it.

Will definitely look at pate and wet food for the licky mat.

A snuffle mat with soft treats?

You could do some scent work with her, that is great for their brains and wears them out well.

Little home made agility course?

Any new tricks you could work on?

Hide treats and she can then scent and search for soft treats.

Forget Kong, snuffle mat & co. They are a glorified pacifier. You are teaching your dog to always being busy and needing to chew or lick. Which can, in some cases, backfire massively!
I think it's time to work on your bond and have some fun! Teach her some tricks, give paw, bow gracefully, push a big blow up ball with the nose, put front feed on an slightly raised surface (like a thin book) then a little pirouette with paws still on the book... do a few 5- 10 minute sessions 3-4x day. That will give her a good mental & physical workout. She'll crash in her bed happy and fast asleep.

And doggy will have some party tricks up their sleeve!

There is no reason why the OP can't do both things with her dog.
The dog is used to having chews, so a licky mat is an alternative whilst the gums are healing. It may not work for some dogs, but can be incredibly relaxing and stress relieving for others.
And snuffle mats are a form of scentwork, so exercise the dog's brain too.

Personally I wouldn't do anything much with her - she's in season and recovering from surgery, so I'd be encouraging plenty of down time, settling and resting. Nothing bad will happen to her if she has a week off.
