My circumstances are such now that I can offer a home to a dog. My last one died just over three years ago. I live in a house with a garden, in a village, I am financially secure and am not currently in work, so I think that my circumstances are more than suitable.

I have put myself forward to some of the local rescues, but it is all via email or web forms and they never reply. I don't even get a chance to speak to anyone. What am I missing? Has anyone had any success and how did they achieve it?

I believe quite firmly that rescue is the way forward as so many dogs need a home, but honestly at this rate, I am thinking about contacting a breeder and buying a dog. It's such a shame when the dogs need homes and the rescues need the money.

What sort of dog are you looking for?

And roughly what area do you live in? People might be able to suggest rescues to try local to you.

If you want a specific breed, you could try the breed club. They usually have a rehoming section.

Contact specific breed rescues. I volunteered for one and assessed the suitability of potential homes.

People tend to have more luck with foreign rescues. But remember that usually they are run by volunteers who tend to have jobs, kids and their own pets as well. But never hearing back from domestic rescues is a common complaint, it isn't you!

Thank you for your replies. Its good to know its not just me. I'm after a small or medium dog and I'm located in the East. I don't really want a puppy and am happy to have a mixed breed. I hadn't thought of going to a breed rescue, so thank you for that suggestion.
