Cockapoo or Cavapoo

We’re taking the plunge with our first dog this year. In the research phase and it’s down to either a Cockapoo or Cavapoo. We’re going for male I think. We’re an active family and have one of us working from home. Two kids over age of 10 both sensible. Small ish house and mid size garden. Lots of fields and green space nearby. Want a dog that won’t chew our house to bits and be fairly well behaved! Committed to fully training them obviously as I know that’s an essential factor for behaviour. I adore dogs and walk others’ regularly so I’m really excited we’re taking this first step to get our own but I’m worried about making the wrong choice. Any advice would be hugely appreciated

@KaleQueen
do you now feel sufficiently informed to actually spot a good breeder though?

I doubt it since she's still defending Donna, with her good intentions. I'm pretty sure her only intention is to make as much money as possible. One poodle x 5 bitches (at least) per year = a bloody fortune.

@YourWinter I remember that. The pair of them still pop up in adverts on my FB, although they seem to have gone their separate ways.

@KaleQueen You must be new to the Internet if you think people are being rude. Everyone has been extremely polite by MN standards. They've just pointed out facts you don't want to hear.

Feel free to ask for advice and/or opinions next time you find a dedicated breeder with an excellent track record. Then other more diligent people can do the background checks for you.

Another goady one. Was there any need?
Edited to add: I’ve literally sat with my family tonight talking through all of the good advice I’ve been given here. It’s been hugely appreciated. I’m sad that some people feel so superior that they want to bring a newbie and still learning person down. I’m guessing you get some sort of thrill out of it? Or why do it?

Ah I love that. Thanks for sharing. We’ve decided on male (and soon ish as in next 12 months) as the husband is outnumbered by female humans already and he’s got a rollercoaster ahead as the girls head into teens and I hit the dreaded meno, so it’ll hopefully be his therapy dog 🤣 (and mine…)

😹😹😹… bless him! He sounds like my lovely Dad! He wanted boys, got twin girls, and so we got a boy cat who was “ the son I never had”… and “ the only one who understands me in this bloody house of women”!! … 🙀😹!

.. I can imagine a year from now you and your DDs rolling your eyes at them when they have fallen asleep together on the sofa! ….. It is going to be so fantastic! ENJOY! 😽

Dunnocantthinkofone · 13/06/2026 22:03

You got some flack quite rightfully for defending the puppy farmer. Stating she must love dogs and had good intentions certainly did you no favours whatsoever having had everything painstakingly explained to you. People taking time out to help you being met with that attitude was the issue. You’ve yet to row back from that position either!

That said, I hope you now have more idea of the pitfalls and succeed in getting a healthy well bred puppy from a good breeder. All any of us want is to stop these absolute bastards from profiting from the misery of dogs and prevent more people being taken in.

Objectrelations · 13/06/2026 22:17

Another vote here for a miniature poodle. They are wonderful, humorous , intelligent dogs with stable temperaments and can look jowever you want them too - eg a **poo or a doodle etc

Cockapoo or Cavapoo

I do understand that and I wasn’t defending her. But I am curious about people like Donna who I wonder maybe do they think they’re actually a good breeder but don’t realise they’re not? Maybe I try to see the good in people too much.

This sounds great I will explore. Crufts is on my bucket list, I’ve never been. Me and my youngest were watching re-runs of ‘fly ball’ last night, and she’s was in awe. So might even get the kids interested in coming too.

Be a bit careful about visiting Discover Dogs with allergies. My lot are only mildly sensitive to dogs but going into a hall full off different breeds had two of them watching for inhalers in minutes.

I’m sorry to say it, but Donna’s really done a number on you. You are spectacularly naive if you think this sort of outfit is anything other than a profit making exercise with the absolute basics in welfare at the very best.

There is NO good in someone like her. None.
I spend my entire working life dealing with the fallout from absolute scum like her. So forgive me for frankly telling it how it really is …..not your Disney view of the world

Kids are fine it’s the husband with asthma. Neither got the asthma gene. Must be a decent cross breed we did there 😃

I’m not stupid. She hadn’t ’done a number on me’. As soon as it was pointed out she wasn’t okay i took that on board. Just incase you’re interested in my levels of intelligence l’m post graduate educated. I’m just interested in how people think, and I’m curious whether some people who breed dogs that way genuinely think they’re lovely and doing a lovely thing.

You do understand that male/female dogs don’t demonstrate stereotypical human genders?

getting a male so your husband isn’t “outnumbered by girls” is bizarre. The dog won’t be going to football matches and the pub to drink beer with him, like it wouldn’t be into shopping and getting it’s hair done if it were female.

walks, food, training, grooming. No difference between male/female. Especially once neutered.

get the puppy whose personality suits you and your situation best. Don’t exclude puppies on some weird sex based issues your husband has.

i got a boy dog as he was the less dominant puppy, and eager to please. His sisters were very confident and I didn’t want that personality.

Donna, btw, if you street map her address it’s a small end of terrace, with a lot of big outbuildings. No way all those dogs are being raised “in a family home”.

Bloody hell, is the OP not allowed to make a lighthearted comment? This is the sort of joke that we make in this house, and we are very well aware that dogs are, well, dogs.

OP has clearly learned a lot from this thread, and has been gutsy enough to stay with it despite some downright supercilious comments ('Then other more diligent people can do the background checks for you'; 'you shouldn't get a dog' ). I've said it before and I'll say it again: if some regular posters on this board are unpleasant to people who post for advice, then good advice will not get through. And there has been a lot of good advice, from other regular posters eg @TheHungryHungryLandsharks and @Dunnocantthinkofone

It can be hard to admit you were wrong (which OP has pretty much done). It would be really cool to see these threads cutting people a bit more slack. We ALL make mistakes, we all know different things (it was only relatively recently that I discovered searching Companies House, and I am no slouch on the research front), we all have different priorities.

I get so pissed off by some of the attitudes on this board sometimes. And it's not that I don't care about the dogs, because I absolutely do. I just also care about creating an environment in which potential dog owners can come and learn, and not be treated like dirt

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/06/2026 21:54

I couldn’t agree more, @EdithStourton. When we had all three dses at home, plus two male cats, I used to joke that I was outnumbered.

redboxer321 · 14/06/2026 22:07

I wonder if those posters who have made supercilious comments would benefit from wearing a shock collar in order to correct their behavior.

Savoretti · 14/06/2026 22:10

I’m a dog groomer and a high proportion of my dogs are cockapoos, cavapoos, cavachons or labradoodles
They all vary in size and coat type very much so be very careful if you want non shedding.
Generally they are very soppy
and cute, but separation anxiety is high and they can be pretty neurotic. Many have ear infections and digestive problems.
I think people love them because they look so cute.
if it were me I would get a miniature poodle
pure bred and trim him a teddy bear cut so you get the cute look without the mixed breed

Dp was rather excited when I got ddog2 he was glad it was a male as he was outnumbered 5 to 1 at that point and thought they'd bond ...... Ddog2 is the biggest mummy's boy and won't listen to dp at all!

redboxer321 · 14/06/2026 22:24

@EdithStourton Never?! But it wasn't only me. And your sure did pick and choose, didn't you?
You know what pisses me off? Posters who pick up on a few comments and ignore many others, just so they can have a go at posters they don't like/think are illogical while praising those the do/want to be in with. All with a sprinkling of 'be kind'. And to wait 13 pages to say that. That's what pisses me off.

I assume OP was clearly being lighthearted and joking. Like my lovely late Dad who I was referring to in my reply to her, who used to complain about living in a house of “ bloody women” and only the cat “understood him”. He was well aware “PCB” ( Puss Cat Babe) was feline and didn’t share beers with him when my twin and I were asleep.

( … mind you, that was the only time I ever saw him cry, when the cat died. Maybe they truly were on a higher level of understanding….)……🙄🤔🤷🏼‍♀️……

😂😂never thought I’d be tagged as the popular kid in class! How about you @TheHungryHungryLandsharks?

Seriously though, can we all just give it a rest? Squabbling among ourselves is pointless and more than a little bit counterproductive

I just picked up the first two I spotted this evening - you and someone else - plus the first one I quoted.
I wasn't going to read the whole thread to highlight all of them.
Nonetheless, if you're going to be unpleasant to a new poster, don't be surprised if someone picks you up on it.

And I didn't wait to say it - I wasn't keeping tabs on it, I just caught up with it in a rush.

But yes, the squabbling is pointless. I'll sod off now.

It's just because you are a trainer and Landsharks a breeder and are both knowledgeable. Nothing to do with being a popular kid. Just thought it was a bit blatant by Edith.

Shame you didn't read the whole thread, you would have seen I was anything but unpleasant to the OP. But that wouldn't suit your agenda now, would it? And talking about unpleasant, you may want to take a look in the mirror.
I did get a little frustrated with the OP admittedly like many other posters did. Shame you didn't see their posts.
