New pup feeding help

Hi everyone
we are bringing our puppy chihuahua home at the end of next month
the breeder has recommended a raw diet, however my son is immunocompromised and this wouldn’t work for our family.
my son has been devastated and not himself since we lost our chihuahua as he was his best friend, so we’re really looking forward to bringing him home however I really feel conflicted on what to feed him! Our last chihuahua was a rescue and he wouldn’t eat anything but royal canine kibble as that was what he was used to.
so I feel like I have no idea what to feed our new pup and how much etc
thsnk you

is your breeder feeding a raw diet now? I would ask them exactly what they are feeding the pups and if not raw, stock up on what they are currently using and then slowly start to wean to what you fed your previous dog (mixing half old food and half new food until it’s slowly just the new food)

If they are feeding raw at the moment, I would kindly explain to the breeder that it isn’t something you can sustain and provide them with the kibble that you will be feeding the pup with and ask that they feed this to the pup asap so their stomach can get used to it before you bring them home.

At the end of the day, the raw diet is a recommendation and it doesn’t work for your family and honestly may not even work for pup in the long term!

Wishing you all the best with your new pup, I hope they become a new best friend for your son.

Cold pressed is the second best option to raw. We get darf from sabre pet food. They do a puppy one or they can have the adult one. Our puppy is thriving on it.

Forgot to add that if you are looking to move away from the previous kibble you used, we feed our dog cold pressed (A German brand, Markus Maule). It can only be bought online but there are lots of cold pressed options out there

Darf. Our puppy has been great on it. Good luck!

Just choose one and stick with it. The food will come with a feeding guide on how much to give. I bet you and your DS can’t wait Smile

We feed our puppy a mixture of dry kibble (cold pressed) & wet food.

It’s fourthglade as they offer good wet & dry food choices but so do some other brands.

Just choose a high quality food & stick to it if the puppy likes it.

FWIW the whole raw thing is Internet hype, so don't feel any obligation to stick with it. There are countless studies showing the risk to humans of cross contamination is huge. Also, the neospora contained in the faeces of dogs fed on raw is making cattle infertile. Again, lots of scientific evidence of this.

Actually meant to add we put puppy milk on breakfast kibble, either tuna (in water) or some tinned butchers tripe on lunch kibble, plain kibble for dinner….for every meal we put half in the bowl and half in a snuffle mat. Snuffle mat has been great for her stimulation

Could you link some? I've not seen anything (I just googled) but would be interested to read some!

Yes, certainly, give me a while to dig it out....

LuvMyPuppers · 25/05/2026 10:25

My dogs are fed raw but, before these, I had the same breed and fed him Wellness Core and Acana.

The one thing I'd recommend you do if you are feeding dry/commercial food is brush those teeth!!

It is a myth that dry food is better for teeth (look this up online and refer to your vet for confirmation) and, with small dogs, it is absolutely imperative that you start brushing their teeth from the time they are puppies or they will lose their teeth quite quickly through periodontal disease.

Congrats on your new puppy!
