We said goodbye today šŸ’”

We said goodbye to our WCS today (well yesterday) and after a few hours of fitful sleep from exhaustion I’m now up, devastated again.

She had canine dementia and it was just too much for her, she only had arthritis and was just about to turn 12 so I feel like she’s been cheated. She wasn’t her at the end and I know it was the kindest thing but I’m here in bed, with her fleece feeling like I want to go with her.

Sorry to be posting, just feel so, so lost. We haven’t been without her in bed for years.

I'm sorry for your loss.

It's no comfort just now but the pain you are feeling is a reflection of how important she was to you, that you loved her and your life with her. That's all a dog wants - an owner that willingly shares their lives with them. They need food and shelter but you gave her more than that and when it was needed, you put her first and accepted that your pain was the price paid so that she was free.

It's a cliche but with time you will be rewarded with memories that make you smile instead of hurting. That's the gift that she leaves you.

Go easy on yourself, you've lost a member of your family and the sense of loss you feel is normal. They are never just a dog.

Thank you. I know you are right but these doubts are clawing at my mind. I just want to feel her head at my feet.

She touched so many people’s lives, she came into schools, she lived with students during Covid when they were locked down and lonely, she really was amazing. Yet ultimately she was ours, padding around looking for cheese. As you say, they never are just a dog xxx

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've got an elderly WCS (he's nearly 13) and it's breaking my heart to see him declining.

They steal such a huge part of your heart, don't they. You must be utterly lost and there's nothing anyone can say that will make it better so I won't even try Flowers

Thank you so much, watching her disappear was heartbreaking so my thoughts are with you ā™„ļø.

We are lost. We tried to go out but just cried in the street and people looked. We’ve got her ashes back and I’m just so sad she’s gone and not chasing her ball anymore. I just did an Ocado order and all her food came up as ā€œhave you forgotten?ā€ 😄

i lost two of my oldies last year. it broke me being so close together. i still have another 3 dogs at home and i think that helps as i haven’t lost the noise and routine. i love them all individually but i have had to accept that to own so many is to lose them and break my heart but i would not change it x

The best we can do for them is give them a good life, however long or short it is, and it sounds like she had a very full and lovely life. You will always love her, but it gets easier, it truly does.

I lost my 15 yr old Cocker last year. I miss her, but I don't miss constantly worrying about her. She wasn't an easy dog but I loved her dearly. I'm sorry that you're hurting so much, but you put your dog before yourself, which many people don't do. It will get easier in time. Xx

I’m so sorry OP xx
I lost my old girl last year and it took a long time for the house not to feel empty (despite us still having dogs) She was such a big presence.

Your dog sounded absolutely wonderful and I’m sure she would be so proud of you that you were able to make that difficult decision for her.
Take care of yourself xxx
