How do I keep my greyhound's teeth clean ?

He's 4 and had a dental under GA before we adopted him. Want to keep his teeth in good condition but he's not keen on teeth brushing.

Are the following worth trying:

Plaque Off in food
A marrowbone from the butchers or are these too hard for greyhoubd teeth?
Chicken wings - unsure whether cooked or raw

Or any other suggestions would be welcome

I get the Aldi version of dentastix, about 60p a packet.
DDog has a toothbrush and paste arriving in the post today, I’ll report back 🤣

Firstly never ever give a dog cooked chicken bones! They splinter and can perforate the intestines.
Marrow bones are fine. but really daily brushing is the only way, just like us! You get special dog toothpaste that has enzymes in that help break down plaque before it turns into tartar.
Greyhounds are pretty notorious for bad teeth so I would train him to accept brushing. YouTube will be your friend here.

My two rescues (not greyhounds) have a fish skin chew daily and have excellent teeth despite their miserable starts.

Raw carrot as a snack
Did wonders for our dog

Clementine12 · 11/04/2026 10:14

I agree with the carrot. Our vet told us to give carrots rather than dentastix. Cheaper and healthier! It was the highlight of our dog’s day!

We brush as often as we can, and give carrots. He also has an ultrasound cleaning treatment at the dog groomers every now and then which really helps.

MyPuppyLuv · 11/04/2026 10:22

I brush my dogs teeth most days. It's easy once you get comfortable with it so they can be comfortable. There are lots of YouTube videos that will help if you're unsure how to proceed, what things to buy etc.

Raw bones

YeOldeGreyhound · 12/04/2026 00:12

My mum's greyhound has amazing teeth. He has the seaweed supplement in his food, and his bedtime snack is a dried chicken foot. He also has raw bones like ribs and marrowbones. My mum never brushes his teeth.
He has ultra-sonic cleaning at a groomers done every 3 months.
His vet always comments on how great his teeth are.

GenericUsername101 · 12/04/2026 12:20

Unfortunately as mentioned by pp they have terrible teeth so if you can get brushing sorted it’s a good idea - my greyhound has Dentastix daily and his teeth are still awful, my 2 other dogs (not greyhounds) have good teeth.

Ostrich bones are useful, as are trachea.

redboxer321 · 14/04/2026 12:12

The best I have found is Canident from Seaweed for Dogs.
It really works to keep her teeth clean.
She can't have bones but she has pizzle sticks and things like that.
I also brush them daily... or I try to!
