Puppy & 16 year old dog

We’re looking at adopting a ‘stray’ puppy from a municipal shelter in Greece (we live here). I already have a 16 year old Cavapoo. She’s very slow in her old age, arthritis in her back legs and partially deaf.
just looking for advice aside from the obvious or anyone’s opinions? I’m aware they’ll need separating at times and introduced slowly to each other etc. The reason I was leaning toward adopting a puppy rather than an adult dog is because I have 2 & 5 yo DC, and with many strays here who have been through horrible things I’d be scared of the scars and behaviours that might leave them with.

Will your old dog cope with a pup? Mine would hate it (even though he still enjoys meeting dogs out & about). I'd personally wait until my old dog had passed. I'd also be wary about the bounciness and landshark phase of a pup with young children.

Honestly at 16 and quite dodery I don’t think it’s fair to inflict a puppy on your old dog. Let her live out her last time in peace and then get a new puppy

I think it would be very unfair to inflict a puppy on a dog that elderly so I’d leave it until your current dog has passed on .

Has she lived with other dogs previously? If so, how long has she been on her own?

If not, then I would say she is too old to inflict a puppy on her, and I completely understand why an older dog would not work for you.

Let her have her remaining time in peace.

I would agree. Why introduce a pup now. Seems unfair. Your old dog probably doesn't have long left. Give her peace and once she has gone you can consider a new addition.

Thank you all. These were my thoughts to be honest. She has lived with other dogs all her life up until 3 years ago, but a lot has changed for her in those past three years in the way of ageing and decline in health. 🥰

Honestly, if she's 16, I would focus on giving her all your love and attention, and look for a pup after she has gone. She deserves peace and stability in her old age.
