What do you use to brush your skinny / boney / whippet type dog?

Currently use a rubber mitt which he likes but it doesn't get much fur out (shorthaired). Have seen shredding brushes which look like they'd do the job but look too harsh and aggressive for my thin skinned pooch. What do you use?

I have whippets and I don't brush them at all 😳

Their hair is far too short to need it. My two don't even shed much at all so have never had the need to worry about brushing them.

I don’t have a whippet but I’ve used a rubber zoom groom on previous dogs, and a tangle teezer which is designed for humans but nice and soft but effective.

redboxerclub · 06/03/2026 17:49

I have a boxer and the rubber brush like a zoom groom is the best. He is flat coated but thick and it removes tons of hair. If there was fur to be shed it would get it out! So I suppose your dog doesn’t shed much.

If you must brush the poor sod, how about an equestrian water brush which is soft and similar to a tangle teaser?

tabulahrasa · 06/03/2026 19:20

A knobbly glove - dunno how else to describe it 😂 and a rubber curry comb for shedding

I use a tangle teaser on the furrier dog

stayathomegardener · 06/03/2026 19:25

I have always had whippets, never brush them.

I never see any evidence of shedding, it would be like looking for stray eyelashes!

At most I might stroke a little coconut oil over his coat by hand at most.

I have short haired dogs....never brushed them in my life...why would you?

BrassyLocks · 06/03/2026 19:34

No idea. But I'd love to see a pic of your cute whippet 😍

Same I dont brush mine either. You could use a cat hairbrush with the soft bristles I suppose.

I have an English Toy Terrier, I don't brush him at all.

faerylights · 07/03/2026 12:25

We have a beagle and never brush him, he doesn't need it.

I know lots of sighthounds as well and none of them ever get brushed!

ScattyHattie · 09/03/2026 18:14

For my greyhounds I used a soft equine body brush and a knobbly rubber brush like a zoom groom to get up the loose coat. A curved shedding blade also for horses was useful during season changes when the loose fluff seems never ending for a dog with such fine fur but prob too big to avoid the boney bits on a whippet .

HollywentLightly · 09/03/2026 18:17

I have a greyhound who sheds constantly. He gets a rub down (outside - this time of year the birds love his hair) with some silicone knobbly gloves and loves getting his arse scratched.

Xenomoth · 09/03/2026 18:19

I don’t brush him but he adores having his face wiped with a wet wipe-it’s very odd! So sometimes I do the body with that too whilst he makes approval noises.

Dbank · 09/03/2026 18:22

We have a whippet, never brushed him, but I think he must have been Scotchgarded at some point as most of the mud falls off before we get home.

DeanStockwell · 09/03/2026 18:29

I found rubber gloves ( marigold type ) best for short hair dogs and cats .
It means uou can get into all the small areas like in the ears , arm pits between the toes .
