Is a dog shower a silly idea?

We’re planning to get a lab towards Autumn this year. Before then we’re having some work done to the house, part of this is redoing our downstairs loo. I want to extend this and make a full utility room and so we have a separate entrance to come into the house at the back that isn’t directly into the kitchen. I considered adding a dog bath but a Labrador is going to be too big for me to lift in and out and I know an older dog may struggle with steps when they get to that age. I’m thinking do we put in a shower (wet room with glass panel style) and then potentially humans can use this too or would count as another bathroom further down the line when we sell this house.
From friends with labs they seem to just wash them at home rather than take to a groomers but happy to be corrected on this.

100% do this. I wish we had thought of this when doing our house up.

we live in a very muddy rural environment and our only options for rinsing down the dog are a cold outdoor hose (not pleasant for dog) or our nice indoor shower upstairs (heavy lifting!)

Fivelegged · 02/03/2026 11:27

Most people I know with mucky dogs just have a hot water tap outside.

feemcgee · 02/03/2026 11:28

This is a great idea!

LollipopLil · 02/03/2026 11:29

I genuinely thought you were asking if you should throw a 'dog shower' like people have 'baby showers'!!

🤭🤣

MyGirlDaisy · 02/03/2026 11:29

I would definitely put in a dog shower. At some point we hope to redo our utility and d/s loo and it’s something I would really want. So much easier than washing muddy feet in buckets and having to wait for summer to bath my dog. Go for it!

RabbitsEatPancakes · 02/03/2026 11:29

I know someone who did this, wet room with a walk in shower. They have a raised shower seat/ bench- it's all fully tiled that the dogs can stand on. And a hand rail that you could attach a lead to. It looks very nice and like a normal human shower but is mostly used by their dogs. It's a very clever design.

I've also heard of people putting electric showers on the outside of their house- in little boxes like gas meters are in. So they can wash off muddy dogs outside even in winter.

Me to. I only clicked because I thought it would be fun bun fight!

sittingonabeach · 02/03/2026 11:33

@LollipopLil so did I

LollipopLil · 02/03/2026 11:35

Now I feel like it was a missed opportunity when I brought my two rescue dogs home! 😁

Sunnymysunshine · 02/03/2026 11:37

Yea I also thought you were having a party for your new puppy where everyone brings them a toy or something, but your idea sounds good too 😁. I wish I had one, I have to lift my German shepherd in the bath, then get in with him because hes a bit scared .

100% this - we have one and it's brilliant, by the utility door. Only slight downside being if it's still pissing it down with rain when you get home, unless you can get it under cover. Cost effective too.

Me too, and was getting ready to say what a ridiculous idea it was.

This sounds very sensible though!

Starlight1979 · 02/03/2026 11:49

Definitely do this! We just hose ours down in the back garden as we would have to traipse through the house, up the (carpet) stairs and across the landing to get them in a shower which is just not going to happen. I would LOVE somewhere downstairs we could wash them off.

Also a bit gutted that it isn't a thread about a Doggy (Baby) Shower 😂

I think it's an excellent idea, I'm getting a hot outside tap put in but if I had the space I'd definitely get an extra wet room

Mitherations · 02/03/2026 12:02

We stick the dog in the walk in shower when we get home, downside being that she loves it so much that sometimes when I'm in there she will boink the bathroom door open and join me for fun. Then I'm drying a very relaxed and scented freshly showered dog instead of drying my hair!

So did I! I was SO prepared to say “if you do this please post photos”

pelagra · 02/03/2026 12:14

We did this, and it worked really well. It also meant we had three showers available when the house was full.

Make sure you have a hair collector over the drain hole. Labradors produce a remarkable amount of spare fur when you wash them.
Also check that the shower tray is tough enough to withstand claws.

Same! I saw the title and clicked to see people losing their shit over a puppy shower party Grin

TBH (though I don't have a dog) that would still outweigh the downside of frequent downstairs bathroom/utility room cleaning from a muddy wet dog shaking itself, and masses of hair in the plughole.

loveev · 02/03/2026 12:40

I’m literally doing this now , converting our garage into a utility room/bootroom and shower. Mainly for my son coming in from rugby and the dog being showered .

EverythingIsComputer · 02/03/2026 12:40

Great idea, you’ll be glad you did I bet. I have a wet room and when my lab is filthy I wash him in there and I did splash the cash when we did the wet room and splurged on the Hansgrohe dog shower head which I actually find really good.

Editing to ask that you pay the puppy tax when you get your pup in the autumn. And I agree a puppy shower would be cute (this is coming from someone who finds the idea of baby showers ridiculous!).

Absolutely not. Definitely worth getting one if you’re having the work done anyway!
