Watching for first time. I thought people raved about this film.

are we supposed to feel sympathy for the couple and scorn towards the poor dog??

They didnt train their large breed and then had two kids.

Thiught this was a feel good film...

.keep going?? 45 mins left...

I think you are meant to love the dog. I am not a dog person but loved this film when it first came out- always makes me cry.

MindYourUsage · 01/03/2026 19:45

F*ck me

They've just had a third

Oh I do love the poor dog!

It is not the dog's fault he has never been trained!

Just finding myself shouting a telly telly at piss poor irresponsible dog ownership. Hardly feel good film

Apparently none of the dogs playing Marley were trained either.

ArticWillow · 01/03/2026 20:02

I liked the book, it's all about love and chaotic family life with a less than perfect pet dog. It's all dramatised for effect. So just sit back and enjoy!

at least they keep their untrained, mad dog. A lot of people would have just abandoned the dog after the first baby

staringatthesun · 01/03/2026 20:05

The end is pants, not to plot spoil but it goes on and on in a very cheesy way!

lljkk · 01/03/2026 20:12

Marley & me is almost 20 years old.

I'm old which means I remember when pet owners weren't perfect in every way. When people screwed up & thought it wasn't end of world to be human. When there were lots of movies about naughty pets & their imperfect owners. Anyway, that movie was made for that world, not the world of modern pet owners who do everything perfectly and are scathing at everyone who isn't like them.

this thread makes me want to sit down & enjoy a Ted movie.

It’s not a documentary.
Most films require the suspension of disbelief in parts.
Maybe this one isn’t for you

mazedasamarchhare · 01/03/2026 20:16

The book was much better than the film, and in the book iirc he does try and train Marley, but I don’t think it was hugely successful!

That's fair. Perhaps I have spent too long on mumsnet it has warped my ideas about realistic dog ownership.

I do remember feeling totally inadequate when Ddog was a puppy reading these boards!
