I did a daft thing

I was walking my dog this afternoon in a quiet woodland area. A man and a dog approached me. The man was scrolling through his phone and didn’t notice his dog having a poo. I smiled at the man and pointed at his crouching dog. He said “oh, he’s having a poo” and went back to his phone. I asked him if he was going to clear up. He answered that he was in the middle of something. At that point I should have left it but I was rooted to the spot. I offered him a dog bag but he refused. I just stood there. Anyway eventually he got a bag out and cleared up.

Had I not been there I’m sure he wouldn’t have bothered. He didn’t even know his dog was going to the toilet.

I just feel stupid now. Anything could have kicked off.

you made your choice.
don't feel stupid - you must have sensed he was harmless perhaps?
i have told people also, but only very rarely

Lighterandbrighter · 26/02/2026 18:53

I wouldn't clean up a poo done by my dog off a path in a quiet woods. Our local nature reserve even have signs saying "get a stick, give it a flick". You're right that he could've got nasty, but from the description you were quite the busy body here.

ZookeeperSE · 26/02/2026 18:54

Hmmm I see what you mean, but good for you anyway.
I did similar on the beach yesterday. Bloke walking way ahead of his three dogs, and not looking round, so I told him his dog had just pooed, and pointed it out for him - oh oh I always pick it up blah blah blah - whatever.

ZookeeperSE · 26/02/2026 18:55

Lol - expecting people to pick up their own dogs shit makes you a busybody 🤣. Hilarious.

It wasn’t off the path. It was a massive poo.

i saw people walking on the prom, their dog just pooed as it walked, i was too far away, and on the phone, to call them, but i watched loads of people having to avoid it, right in the centre of the pavement.

when i did tell some women they said We didnt see it, i said, You werent looking, i mean their dog was behind them!
so annoying

Sidebeforeself · 26/02/2026 18:58

But you dont know he wouldnt have bothered. Dog was mid poo he was on his phone..what else was he supposed to do? At least he had a bag with him so he obviously knows to clean up. I think you jumped to conclusions.

Sidebeforeself · 26/02/2026 18:59

However I am completely any dog shit and blame the owners entirely! Our local streets are covered in it sadly

Indiannadreaming · 26/02/2026 19:00

There’s no way he’d seen his dog pooing. I was there.

Edited

What I meant was he went back to his phone after you pointed it out cos the dog was still mid poo so realistically he had to wait didnt he

I read the room. Perhaps I was wrong but at least the massive poo in the middle of the path was cleared up.

I thought I’d be chided for speaking to a man on a lonely walk. I’m surprised posters are calling me a busybody and guilty of jumping to conclusions. Who knew. 🤷‍♀️

Oh I see, from your original post I thought the dog was in the woods. Yeahhhh, that needs sorting.

It’s Mumsnet - everyone has to be contrary just for the sake of it. Apparently.

Or..people are allowed to have different opinions. Who knew.

Parsleyforme · 26/02/2026 19:27

I think you probably got a sense of him before/during speaking to him and realised he wasn’t going to get violent over a poo. Things are going a bit far if we become scared of interacting with any man while alone (especially when we are the ones to make the approach). The streets round here could probably do with a few more poo police like you! But if you’d done that to me I would tell my partner you stood over me like you were mum 🙈 and I’d swerve you if I saw you again

Tacohill · 26/02/2026 19:28

You sound like a twat.
Do you stand and stare at your dog whilst it’s having a shit?

The man was on his phone waiting for the dog to finish.

You must have been very embarrassed once you realised he had his own poo bags.

Why would you be chided for talking to a man?
It has never been wrong to talk to a man.
I talk to loads of men whilst out with my dog.

Well, that’s lightened my mood, thanks.
