Dog drinking all the time?

Our ten month old golden retriever is drinking vast amounts of water today and has piddled on the itchen floor. I have to keep letting her out in the garden and refilling her water bowl. She is not off her food. What could this be?

A problem with kidneys?

I would get a check up at the vets.

gruit · 15/02/2026 16:05

it could be diabetes, I’d get a vet check

VickyEadieofThigh · 15/02/2026 16:44

A wide range of things can cause this. Could be a UTI, diabetes, Cushing's disease, kidney failure...

Only your vet can find out for certain.

She needs to see a vet - my first concern would be diabetes.

sharkstale · 15/02/2026 16:47

My dog started doing this and was diagnosed with diabetes.

Mumofyellows · 15/02/2026 16:48

My vet told me this can be a sign of pyometra, when she was off colour and he told me to watch out for her sudden drinking a lot and not being able to hold her wee. If she’s not been spayed and has had her first season maybe bear it in mind but hopefully it’s something simple - best to get her checked out though. Dog ownership is so worrysome!

When ours did this is was pyrometra, so they need a vet pronto,

Straight to the vets (out of hours, emergency). This is exactly what insurance is for.

saltandvinegarpringles · 15/02/2026 18:12

Vets ASAP. I hope you’ve rung by now.

narcASD · 15/02/2026 18:14

My dog (his 16) has mild kidney disease and drinks loads, diagnosed with blood tests, get it checked out

wast542 · 16/02/2026 20:42

This is what happened with out old dog. It was diabetes. Call the vets asap
