Injuries inflicted or caused by your dog

I have a much loved idiot of a dog (hound, almost 60 kg) and until recently the worst injury I'd had was a bit of shoulder soreness, mildly black eye and sore head after headbutting me.
In the last 2 days however, he's given me a concussion (dragging me into a tree when chasing a squirrel, despite being on a dogmatic halter) and then the next day a torn tricep and re-injured rotator cuff, due to pulling me after another squirrel in a strange direction.

I would definitely think twice about getting a genetically predisposed chaser again and certainly one of this size.

Please make me feel better with similar stories of woe.

I got accidentally bitten on the shin when I got between my two springers who were play fighting. I'm glad it wasn't done in anger because it properly hurt.

My thighs are permanently covered in bruises because the current springer insists on leaping onto my lap, which he's far too big to sit on.

My dad volunteered to take my dog out while I was prepping a party, didn’t even make it off the drive before they’d tripped each other up and he wound up with an arm broken in three places 😮‍💨

Playing with my Rottweiler yesterday , it’s not the first time I’ve forgotten that his head is made of concrete 🙈

Up until recently I had 2 Boxers (1 has passed) with a combined weight of 95kg, heavier than me obviously. Because their recall was at best poor, I had them on 20mtr leads for countryside walks, and they'd somehow get tangled together. They'd run off into the distance and the leads would get round my legs throwing me up in the air. So many painful landings, I started taking them separately in the end

More of an injury to my pride than anything physical but I took my cocker spaniel for a walk over the local park where he found some lovely green cow pats to roll in. He also went in the river and came out soaking wet and stinking to high heaven.

The little sod then came running over to me and shook himself. I was absolutely covered in cow shit and manky river water. As if that wasn’t bad enough, we had to walk back to the car past the church where Songs of Praise was being filmed so there were lots of people all dressed up and a camera crew outside.

I have never been so embarrassed in my life!

Does near hypothermia count as a dog inflicted injury?!

My dog rolled in a dead dolphin at a beach 30 minutes from home in the depths of winter. I had to drive home with all 4 windows open.

Iheartmysmart · 02/02/2026 17:19

I’m pretty sure it does @Periperi2025 Fortunately I’d taken ex-DH’s car to the park and not mine so he had the joy of cleaning it afterwards.

Please dont take your dog to anywhere it can chase other animals. That is horrible.

The I can't take my dog out the front door because of the neighbours cat? Or the back door into the lane because of the squirrels?

She's on a lead, not going to get them....

My dear old lump of a staffie left me with a broken nose, black eyes and concussion after tripping me up. He also go excited to see a friend and wiped her out, she broke both wrists. He did a poo in a contractor's work bag and also got told off in a park for hanging off a tree.

I miss that stupid dog!

Current staffie is an old lady rescue. Horrible history. She is like an invisible ninja, always there, look down and wooo, there she is. She's half the size of my old lump so easy sneaking. I can't even see her sometimes! She takes shortcuts under chairs that my other dog couldn't have fit through so she's always THERE. I have learnt to look all around me before taking a single step, especially when in the kitchen 😁

Broken rib from being pulled off my feet on the beach. Lab on a long line, obeyed the Wait! command we’ve been working on for aaaages, then took off again after a crow while I was turned to DH just bout to be smug that she was doing as she was told. I don’t know why I didn’t just let go of the longline, like you’re supposed to. - the beach was empty, there was no danger to her, or the crow. Fell full length on my side and was in agony for a a couple of months.

Ihavelostthegame · 02/02/2026 18:06

Not me but a friend of mine is currently nursing a bad back as a result of carrying her golden retriever back to the car on a walk a few days ago. He figured out when we were still about 10 minutes from the car that we were headed back in the direction of said car. At that point he downed tools and lay down and refused point blank to go in the direction we were headed. He would happily go in the opposite direction however 🤔😂 In the end she had to carry him back as she had to go and collect her child from school and couldn’t play his game any longer!

Please don't be on the dog forum if you don't have any inkling of dog behaviour

I’ve just lost a chunk of hair to a Yorkshire terrier crawling up my head to bark at the cat tormenting her on the other side of the window….so it’s not just the big ones!!!

Springisintheairohyeah · 09/02/2026 17:10

Comedy style whole body face plant (entirely self inflicted - threw ball while long line wrapped around ankle). Broken nose - head butt (dog's skulls are SOLID)

Isit2026yet · 09/02/2026 17:16

@FinallyMovingHouse i tripped over my 40kg dog on the ice and bloodied both knees through my jeans. My 70kg dog has given me a bear hug and as @bugalugs45 says also has a head like concrete and caught my nose causing a nose bleed.

mypantsareonfire · 09/02/2026 19:21

In September 2024, my then ten month old golden retriever pulled me down a bank in the woods chasing a squirrel.

Almost 18 months, two back surgeries, spine injections, private physio later, I am still in pain every day.

Thank god for Axa or I’d still be waiting on the NHS, but it’s a slow recovery.

surprisebaby12 · 09/02/2026 19:22

I’d recommend a head collar. They really reduce the risk of injury with larger animals

Twiglets1 · 09/02/2026 19:28

What I've learnt from this thread is don't use a long line.

Or get a Lab but that ship has sailed.

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 09/02/2026 19:32

Broken ankle, broken wrist and broken leg!

I slipped over my retriever puppy when throwing a ball for him and broke my ankle in 3 places.
My mum looked after him while I was recovering and slipped over the damn dog and broke her leg.
Meanwhile my husband rushing to do the nursery drop off as the only functioning adult left slipped over and broke his wrist.

It was a bloody awful Christmas that year.

You couldn't make it up!

Beamur · 09/02/2026 19:39

My dopey previous dog knocked my Mum clean off her feet by running in-between her legs.
Many years previous to this mum's dog, a super sweet Shi Tzu decided to help me pick her up with an ill timed jump and I bit clean through the side of my tongue.

Wow ... I think you win for the injuries inflicted on the whole family.

All from one sweet little retriever puppy
(looks at my own Lab puppy with worried expression)

My labradoodle (huge) broke my mums nose 🙈 she was walking him up a lane to the park. There was a dog whose back fence faced into the lane. Dog in the lane spent most of his day in the garden and did not like anyone walking past his fence. He would bark and throw himself at the fence. Normally we were prepared for this and had my dog on a short lead and braced to hold him back as we passed. Mum forgot. Dog started going mad, my dog reacted and ran at the fence, dragging my mum with him. My mum ended up hitting the fence face first 🙈 broken nose and 2 black eyes. She worse sunglasses for weeks

my Labrador gave me the most ridiculous injury. A black eye with a chicken ball from the Chinese. I gave him it. He was excited and started shaking his head from side to side. Chicken ball flew out of his mouth, flew towards me and smacked me right on the bone at the outside of me eye. Boss asked me what happened on the Monday at work. I told him. He later took me into a meeting and asked if it was domestic abuse and if I needed him to call anyone 🙈😂 It was so ridiculous that I’m sure many people thought I was covering up for DP hitting me

My lab is also an invisible ninja. I’ve fallen over him SO many times. He has a knack for standing right behind me, without me knowing he is there, right when I’m about to turn round. I landed on him once and he just looked at me like “umm why are you on top of me?”

he also does this thing where when you need to get past him. Instead of getting out of the way, he turns round and just keeps walking backwards infront of you, still completely in the way but looking at you like what adventure are we going on now?

Serenity45 · 09/02/2026 22:28

Wincing and laughing at these! Nothing serious from our lab who is excitable but pretty good (odd bruise/scrape).

I was sporting an impressive black eye the other week after bending down to pet a spaniel on a walk (in my defence she zoomed up to us and sat on my foot wanting a fuss Grin). The owner's other dog (a bloody lab!) decided they needed attention too and headbutting me was the way to get it. Owner was mortified and I did the typical "oh don't worry I'm fine!!" before walking away trying to style it out.

Friend at work broke her wrist when her cocker basically ran through her chasing a ball. Another friend's lab broke her leg (!) when he pulled her over with lead wrapped round her legs.

Agree about size of dogs being a consideration. Our girl is 23kg and I'm comfortable in controlling her if she decides to pull suddenly/chase something Rarely happens tbf. But I have seen people pulled over by powerful dogs on more than one occasion.
