Injuries inflicted or caused by your dog

I have a much loved idiot of a dog (hound, almost 60 kg) and until recently the worst injury I'd had was a bit of shoulder soreness, mildly black eye and sore head after headbutting me.
In the last 2 days however, he's given me a concussion (dragging me into a tree when chasing a squirrel, despite being on a dogmatic halter) and then the next day a torn tricep and re-injured rotator cuff, due to pulling me after another squirrel in a strange direction.

I would definitely think twice about getting a genetically predisposed chaser again and certainly one of this size.

Please make me feel better with similar stories of woe.

Front door half open, saw best four legged friend from down the road, I was tying my shoe- DDog shot out said door and my eye socket took the full brunt of the edge of the door.

Grabbed hold of my small terrier to put his lead on. He spotted another dog who had been winding him up all day. He bounded off, taking me with him. My hand was trapped in the collar and dislocated my finger. I flew into the air decided to do a twist to avoid landing on said finger came down hard on hard muddy ground and broke my back. Took me 6 months to recover.

VanGoSunflowers · 02/02/2026 07:50

All my lab has inflicted upon me is a sore left arm from kangaroo-ing towards other dogs while he’s on lead.

He does however have a habit of kicking any man he meets in the bollocks. I always make it clear I haven’t trained him to do that…

You’re going to have to talk us through this one - how?!

EleanorReally · 02/02/2026 11:28

ha ha, i trod on the ball, which was punctured, instead of kicking it!

FinallyMovingHouse · 02/02/2026 12:17

You are all making me feel better and I'm between wincing and laughing at most of the stories. I'm not sure why we put ourselves through it some days, but they are still worth it and they do love us so, especially when they come to visit you on the floor, post incident, as if to say "whatcha doin' there...can I join in?"

A broken ankle from my DDog running into me from behind. 😫

Belladog1 · 02/02/2026 12:29

Years ago my dog was off lead and running in a country field. He rounded the bend I was stood on and didn't see me .... and literally barrelled into me. I did a somersault mid air and landed on my wrist. Luckily it wasn't broken, but it was very painful for a few weeks.

I currently have a toy dog, and the worst thing he does it nudge me with his nose on the back of the legs as I'm walking. That nose is like concrete.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/02/2026 12:31

36kg lab.

Broken nose - bent down to pick something up and he jumped up to meet me, head-butting me full force with his very solid skull.

Lost count of the number of times he took me out at the knees when he was going through the awkward, clumsy rampaging teenager stage.

He's forever pinching skin/stepping on sensitive bits/knocking your glasses off in an effort to get closer to you. He has no sense of personal space, how pointy his elbows are, or how clonky his big spade paws are.

VanGoSunflowers · 02/02/2026 13:59

@BalladOfBarryAndFreda have you got my dog? Or are they related? Sounds eerily familiar 😂

Nincompoo · 02/02/2026 14:02

No injuries from my current dog but when I was a teenager I was riding my bike with my dog on the lead and he smelled something lovely and stopped dead, pulling me off the bike sideways… had some great bruises!

Never did it again 🤣

Dearg · 02/02/2026 14:03

My dog’s playmate, a Visla, lovely dog , very high energy, raced up to see me, jumped up and banged me right in the face with his forehead. My dentist thought I had been in a car crash, as he dealt with 2 broken teeth.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/02/2026 14:06

It's obviously a lab thing @VanGoSunflowers . Wouldn't have it any other way though. Best dogs in the world.

Periperi2025 · 02/02/2026 14:07

I would never want a dog bigger than 20kg, especially around by DD. My dog is fantastic with her, so no concerns there, but i also like the reassurance that if it comes to it i could wrestle my 17kg dog to keep DD or anyone else safe from him.

I always find it concerning when i see people, particularly women, with dog(s) that they haven't got a hole in hell of controlling if the dog decides it has other ideas.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/02/2026 14:10

*I would like to point out that my lab is the perfect gent around others (animal, vegetable, or mineral) and I can handle him just fine. He's just a clumsy oaf at home (adult only home).

Lazydomestic · 02/02/2026 14:14

Bum bogie
Mistaken for mud - have just given it a darn good all over rub. Transferred to car seat, cover, towel, blanket, steering wheel, hair 🤢

MasculineProviderEnergy · 02/02/2026 14:30

I think the worst mine has done is pulled me over in the mud, or through the nettles. Which is surprising, as he has a strong prey drive. He managed to get headbutted by a muntjac a while back. They both looked surprised.

Gofaster2023 · 02/02/2026 14:57

The jury is out as to whether the dog was really to blame but....

Apparently my infected bursitis in my knee was from play fighting an airedale.

longtompot · 02/02/2026 15:01

Not really caused by her directly, but when suddenly having to run (I'm not a runner) after my dog as she looked as if she was going to go near a gateway onto a road, I popped/tore a muscle in my calf. My dh heard it too. Took weeks to get back to just a gentle walk. She was only a 10kg show cocker spaniel

Same here - I can control mine just fine too he’s just extremely clumsy as yours is! But like you, I wouldn’t have him any other way

Being a dog walker, I have had all sorts of dogs to walk, plus my own.
Labs and Staffs have no idea of their size, and if they want to sit on you, they will, regardless, including stomping all over you to get comfy!
I have also had black eyes and split lips from them being boisterous,
other dogs have dragged me off my feet, thankfully only resulting in bruises and grazes
There was an old lady where I used to live, she was a very delicate old lady, very petite, not an ounce of fat on her, but she always used to have full size coliies or similar. never forget the day I saw her in the woods crashing through the trees with the dog in the lead!

There is a tiny tiny old lady (like 4.5ft tiny) and thin near me who has a Newfoundland and used to have two, her Newfoundland is a 'leaner'!!

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 02/02/2026 15:59

I also have a local tough & tiny older lady with a big dog, they must issue every area with one.
