What to expect from chemical castration?

Our Labrador has just been to the vets and had a chemical castration implant (temporary, 6 months). All went well and the vet said he's never observed bad effects of a surge in testosterone initially. What have everyone else's experiences been, short term and longer term?

Really your vet told you no surges in testosterone? My boy had the implant and I was warned he may have a surge around the 4 - 6 week mark, he most definitely did, he was twitchy, restless and unable to settle and got quite snappy and bad tempered, only lasted a week/10 days and then he settled back to how he was, I found it started wearing off around the 4 month mark as he testicle started to swell again so I chose to have him surgically castrated at that point because I don't want to subject him to the hormone surges again.
