Dog dilemma

I have an Italian greyhound and my mum has a chow chow.
they’ve never got on and due to size difference it’s not something I really want to work on as my Italian is an anxious little thing as it is.
The dilemma I have is my mums just moved house and is not just over an hour away.
shes invited us round for dinner and I don’t really like leaving my Italian for too long (although he is fine).
shall I take him, keep him in his crate in the car (electric car so can leave heating on) or leave him at home where I know it’s stress free for him?

I'd leave him at home and only stay at your Mum's for a couple of hours. That's assuming he has the freedom to roam when left at home. If he's crated, then there isn't much difference.

Can the dogs be in the same house, but separated by stair gates?

My gut tells me to just leave him at home, if he has a good walk before he will likely just sleep anyway. He’s fine been left for 4hrs but would never leave him longer.

Don't leave your dog in the car - they often get stolen from cars.

Leave him at home.

Oh it would be on a private drive (no public access). My dog is my whole entire world, I wouldn’t ever risk the car been broken into :)

I'd also leave him at home. Give him a good walk before you go, and I'm sure he'll be happy having a good doze on his bed/the sofa.

Seconding extra long walk (possibly with any lurcher friends so they can chase and run) and then leave him at home.

You only have two jobs that day - huge long dog walk and go to dinner.

Leave him at home as he will be comfortable there.

I understand that chowchows are not very friendly towards other dogs unless a lot of effort is put into socialisation.

Certainly the two I have known would rather take the noses off any other dog, than play with them.

MyMilchick · 21/01/2026 16:25

Definitely at home, I'm sure he'd rather be there than in your car

Unforgettablefire · 21/01/2026 17:03

Leave him at home. I know he’s a dog but where would be more comfy for him? His own home I bet rather than parked up in a car on his own.

Thanks everyone :)
