Miss having a dog so much!

Long story short, I adopted an elderly rescue in 2015. She had been in kennels for months on end because most people don't want to take on a dog who is already old for obvious reasons. I had her until she passed 2 weeks after my daughter was born in 2020.
I still miss her so very much - she was just so amazing in every way and very much a part of the family.
A good friend of mine who lives just down the road is breeding her lab this year but I've told her I honestly don't feel I can visit when her gorgeous girl has her babies because I know it is just not possible to have one.
I now work out of the house 9-4 most days so I know it wouldn't be fair
to get another dog but how do I get past the longing?
I have said the first thing I'm going to do when I retire is get another rescue, but I'm 45 so that is at least 20 plus years away!

We've just rescued the most adorable dog, luckily we both work from home a lot.

I couldn't resist after seeing her in grim looking kennels and having dog sat for friends a few times. I believe when the right dog is out there, you will meet.

I waited u til I retired early before we got our 2 girls. DH had been wanting a dog for so long but not fair to leave them home alone 5 days out of 7 unless they are very old and sleep most of the time.

Considered getting a cat? Was in a similar position in 2013, ended up getting my first two cats ever and never regretted it.

I lost my dog just before Christmas and really want another one. I’m 65 and home all day. I don’t think I could do a puppy and am, therefore, looking to rescue. However, it is really difficult. I understand that stringent conditions should be in place, but it’s not easy. I have an ancient cat that lives outside (her choice), so that rules out 50%; I don’t want a staffy or a lurcher; I do want a bitch; the dog has to be safe around children and must not be horse-sized. It’s not easy 🙂
