Dog seems poorly and waiting at emergency vet. My direct debit for pet insurance to animal friends didn’t go through yesterday. They’re shut. Will she still be covered

id pay now if they were open. Is there a grace period for a one off missed period of one day

They don’t usually cancel insurance for a payment a day or two late. You generally get a letter warning the insurance will be cancelled before it happens.

dementedpixie · 03/01/2026 18:10

Did it not get paid due to insufficient funds? Or another reason?

NorwichMom · 03/01/2026 18:10

I think they’re going to want to keep her in and am worried the bill might be thousands

Animal Friends are the best people to contact, anyway what alternative is there?

@NorwichMom hope this helps. Log into your account and do it with a debit or credit card online. You can do this in the payments section of your account.

Ok but what alternative do you have

dementedpixie · 03/01/2026 18:13

Googling suggests you can make a payment on your online account with animal.friends

you can logon to your account and pay via debit or credit card under payments section.

ginasevern · 03/01/2026 18:14

If they want to keep the dog in, maybe this will give you time to think straight and get it sorted. The vet won't want to be paid up front.

Clefable · 03/01/2026 18:14

It says you can pay online with your card if you miss a payment. That said, they won’t cancel your insurance for a couple of days late payment. But you’ll have to obviously pay it before you claim and if it remains unpaid they will cancel it.

dementedpixie · 03/01/2026 18:14

Do you have a log in?

i cancelled the dog insurance direct debit

So your direct debit didn't go through because you cancelled it, not due to any fault their end?

I would imagine this will mean the policy has been cancelled.

Isit2026yet · 03/01/2026 18:17

@NorwichMom try it in a different browser.

dementedpixie · 03/01/2026 18:17

Have you cancelled the whole policy?
Where did you cancel the direct debit? With the bank or on the animal friends app?

Clefable · 03/01/2026 18:19

You’re fine, OP. No insurance policy gets instantly cancelled when a payment is late. In fact I suspect there’s regulations to avoid it.

Their own Ts and Cs confirm:

When we will cancel your policy

We can cancel your policy for the following reasons. If we need to cancel your policy, we’ll get in touch with you first by email or post.

If you don’t keep up with your payments

If you’re unable to make a payment, please get in touch with us to find out how we can help.
If we don’t hear from you, we’ll cancel the policy one month after the date we last received a payment. We may be able to reinstate the policy if you pay within 28 days of the cancellation date, and your pet’s health hasn’t changed

Thank you

I know someone said what alternative do I have well have just the vets and there are alternatives. She can have some tests and treatment for £500 or be kept in for £1700

vet said she doesn’t need to be kept in and it’s up to me. I’m waiting for blood test results before deciding but would feel happier about a £1700 bill now I’m more confident she’s insured still

she has bad bloody diarrhoea
