Fleas?

How do you know if there are fleas in the house? Have a dog and never had any problems in 3 years. Lately I've been getting the odd itchy spot on my legs. Dog seems fine aside from the occasional (normal?) scratch. What should I be looking out for or should I just treat the house to be sure?

The only time my dogs got fleas, you could see flea 'dirt' in their coats. Tiny little black/brown specks at the roots of their hair. If you find any, put it on a damp piece of white kitchen roll. If any red colouring weeps out from them, it's flea dirt not mud.

My cat had fleas years ago, I saw one jump on to my foot.
can you see anything?
I had to take the cat to the vet for treatment and got a flea smoke bomb, you set them off and then go out for a few hours.

Do the flea bombs smell?

Yes, I can’t remember though if I went out because you have to or because of my sons asthma.
I think the advice is to go out and then have the windows open afterwards.
