Show cocker or staffie?

DH and I are looking at getting a puppy in the spring but we’re really torn on which breed to go for.

I have always had staffies and most people in my family have a staffie too, but I feel a pull towards getting an all black show cocker, but I don’t really know much about their temperaments.

We both WFH, are fairly active but also love a lazy Afternoon on the sofa. What should we be thinking about, pros and cons, for either breed?

Me too, I clicked expecting this to be a unique dispute between a couple!

My show cockers were were wonderful, so we'll behaved and gentle, really beautiful souls. Loved a good run and their walks generally but were calm in the house. I've not had a working cocker, but apparently they're more energetic.

I also clicked on it thinking it was slow cooker 🤣😅

Team Staffie 100%

I personally don’t like Staffies. I also think there’s a lot of people out there who don’t and will avoid you if out on a dog walk. I appreciate there are also a lot of people who like them too.

Think there are far too many cockers out there.

for every person that avoid them, I can assure you there are 10 who will bolt out their cars or across the street to get a staffie fuss!

I have a brindle staffie boy, he is gorgeous - loves every human and good with kids. He is an arsehole with strange dogs though - definitely make sure you meet the parents, that they are well-natured and like dogs, as I think it’s genetic… Mine’s brother and sister are also arseholes with dogs.

brightbevs · 20/12/2025 12:47

I’d say Staffie because you already know and love the breed! We have a show cocker and obviously adore her, but she is suspicious of strangers (especially visitors to the home), a bit yappy and they are prone to resource guarding and separation anxiety.

Staffie staffie staffie. I’m currently sat scrolling with a snoozing 3 year old blue staffie man marking me! The most loving dog ever.

Barney!

Show cocker or staffie?
Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 20/12/2025 12:59

Team staffie here too

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/12/2025 13:05

I’d go Staffie too, my sister has always had a staffy - fabulous dogs, great with kids though need a lot of training in the puppy stage.

Glad others are amused. Sometimes my dyslexia does give me a laugh.

Thesehills · 21/12/2025 04:59

Staffie.

We have had three over the years, all rescue. All wonderful dogs.

Barney!

He is giving me cuteness aggression to the extent that I am biting my lips 😅

JMSA · 22/12/2025 19:40

Does anyone else find it impossible to speak to Staffies in a normal voice?
I have a voice reserved only for them 😳

Yes - I agree

we resorted to hiding our staffie out of sight under the table in pubs because otherwise we would be hearing constant stories of “broke my heart when my staffie died, can’t have another dog now as I’m too grief stricken” and then whipping phone out and showing us hundreds of pics!

Munchyseeds2 · 02/01/2026 21:51

Staffi all day long!

My votes for a Staffy 🥰

piccolopuppy · 03/01/2026 02:12

Another team staffie!

TheNiftyBiscuit · 03/01/2026 13:38

For either breed, I would be very, very careful about breeding. Staffordshire Bull Terriers are often not good with other dogs. Show Cockers have a tendency towards resource guarding. You would need to be very careful of the temperament of the parents with either breed.

If you have children around the house, I would also consider how other people may view your breed of choice. Their parents may have no issues with you having a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, which is fine. But some may well not want their children around one.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier's are often a bit of a marmite dog. I am one of those people who will go well out of their way to avoid them, after having had an awful experience with one. But other people love them.

Every single staff that I have known, apart from one rescue who was previously treated badly, has been incredible with other dogs. No issues at all. However, a lot of other dogs don’t like them who’s can cause some issues.

Definitely a Staff!

Completely agree with this though, a 10 minute walk with one of mine ended up taking nearly 50 mins as we were stopped so many times.

Letsgoforaskip · 03/01/2026 17:01

Another one on Team Staffie. I am on my second bonkers staffie cross rescue and she is a joyful adoring dog.
