(Not)Cold weather dogs

Today both doggies have refused to go outside in the rain. They would be described as middle-aged dogs I think, both short-haired. If I put their coats on then they will go out for a walk, but if it's raining they noticeably speed up when they think we are heading home!
I simply can't believe that I have the only two dogs on the planet who are fair weather walkers. Do I need to tell DH that we need to get a Labrador to accompany me in the winter for walks/encourage the others out?

My Frenchie won't even walk with a coat on. If it's raining she refuses to go out. And sometimes even when it's dry. She's fine in the warmer months. No amount of bribery works. So I empathise. I guess some dogs just don't like the cold.

My dog has only once backed back inside at the sight of the weather - on a truly revoltingly foul day. He'd have to get over it quick if he didn't like rain as we're in a very rainy bit of the country.

I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback and on rainy days one of us has to go and stand out in the garden with him otherwise he simply will not have a wee. We actually don’t bother taking him for a walk in the rain any more because he just whines the entire time (unless the rain settles in for several days, then he just has to deal with it).

He is such a diva about the weather 😁

My friend's bichon always declines walkies in the rain. She will reluctantly go out to the toilet but is very quick to come back. Wont walk through puddles either.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 08/12/2025 19:08

Well, do you mean cold or do you mean rain? Because there's a world of difference!
I have a rugged outdoor working breed that is double coated. They love really cold weather, will lie out in snow and ice but they hate rain. They refuse to set foot on wet grass, daintily walk around puddles and if it's pouring will refuse to wee for a 12 or 15 hour stretch.
We haven't had any cold weather yet really (in Lancashire) just a hell of a lot of rain, so walks are currently a bit of a battle. Would love a dry spell, no matter how cold.

Mine both hate walking in the rain
Gentle spitting they'll walk in but anything more and my girl refuses.
If its tipping it down for a few days she will hold on as long as possible before she goes outside to relive herself

She also hates being cold but equally hates wearing a coat.
Neither of my dogs have seen snow so I do wonder what their reaction to that would be

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 08/12/2025 19:19

To be fair, he’s not keen on rain. Or wind.

My cavvie loves cold, frost and snow and galumphs about in it grinning happily, but he hates the rain. DH tried to walk him in a downpour yesterday and the dog just dragged him into the nearest pub.

DH was, as you can imagine, devastated.

minsmum · 08/12/2025 19:28

My Wadi dog hates the rain, he will go to the nearest tree and then turn around and drag you home

Idolikeanicepieceofcake · 08/12/2025 20:06

It's absolutely the wet that they dislike. DH reminded me about how we couldn't get them inside when it was frosty outside, particularly if it's a lovely winter, blue sky. There's also plenty of photos of them playing in the snow!

My dachshunds didn’t want to walk in the rain. IMO this is an entirely desirable trait as I don’t particularly like it either and prefer the smell of toasty warm dog to soggy wet.
They were very good at suddenly reversing if they wanted to go out for a wee and it was raining. When then chucked outside they’d go under the garden table, looking very resentfully over their shoulder as they did so.

Dilysthemilk · 08/12/2025 21:05

Same - my Lhasa apso / poodle cross - cried until he was taken home when it was raining on Sunday. Loves a frosty dry morning though and is delighted by snow.

stomachamelon · 08/12/2025 21:06

My pug grinds to a halt at the door if she spots it’s raining. She is pure white and has a couple of coats but that doesn’t change her mind. Which means I have to stand in the rain with a golf umbrella so she will wee (she also hates weeing in the garden to further complicate matters)

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/12/2025 21:13

My dogs are Spanish rescues. They all hate the cold, the wet, the wind, to varying degrees. One in particular hates getting wet feet, the others hate the wind getting in their (large, flappy) ears! At this time of year it’s a constant juggle of who will we manage to get out the door, wearing which outfit, lol.

ArcticGrass · 09/12/2025 07:28

This is so reassuring. Ours will happily leap out of the car boot in a downpour and into a river…into the back garden for a quick wee if it’s raining? Nope.

snoopythebeagle · 09/12/2025 07:44

My beagle hates the rain - which is fine by me 😂
