Vacuum cleaner recommendations for a hairy dog household!

Henry just isn't cutting it since we adopted our big fluffy GSD x wolfdog girl.

I'm looking at Mieles but a bit overwhelmed by options. I've read the bagged ones are better than the bagless? I think whatever I go for will need to be corded as I have a cordless Shark which gets clogged in several different places each time I use it and there's still lots of hair on the rug! Flooring is a mix of laminate, rug and carpets.

Following corgis SHED like nothing I’ve ever experienced before. We had a Miele cordless a complete pile of overpriced s**t even without factoring in the dog hair.
Currently using a Dyson cordless cats and door or whatever it’s called it does a reasonable job I guess.

TheHungryHungryLandsharks · 21/11/2025 10:14

I have a corded Shark Stratos. It has two functions (thick pile - carpet - or thin - wood/other). It's great. I have four adult Goldies and no issues with it at all...except the fact it's heavy so using it is like going to the gym and my arm aches after.

I used to have a cordless one and it was rubbish. The charge always died. But the corded one is great! It is noisy though.

CoubousAndTourmaIet · 21/11/2025 10:16

Miele bagged Cat & Dog has served us well through two Pyrenean Mountain Dogs (one of the heaviest moulting breeds) and 6 Maine Coon cats. Ours is a corded one, never tried a cordless. The only problem is that the bags fill up quickly in moulting season so we still end up scraping up as much fluff as we can by hand.

We previously had several Vax in succession, but the Miele is far superior. One of the Vax pet models was not for purpose and ended up being returned within days.

So yes, we'd recommend the Miele for a woolly bear dog but @Corgiowner 's comment may be more relevant for a shorter coated dog.

Myblueclematis · 21/11/2025 10:21

I had a large hairy cat and I have a bagged, corded SEBO which is fab, it really dealt with the massive clumps of his hair brilliantly. I liked it so much I bought another one for upstairs.

They aren't particularly cheap but they are much less hassle than the bagless ones that you empty practically every time you use it and have to clean the filter. I'd never buy another bagless vacuum cleaner.

The bags hold a massive amount of dust, hair etc. before I need to change it.

They also clean my carpets really well, they have much more suck which the bagless just didn't seem to have.

DancingFerret · 21/11/2025 10:30

Dyson Animal - I bought a refurbished secondhand one; the best £115 I've ever spent (too tight to buy new 😙).

RudolphTheReindeer · 21/11/2025 10:41

I bought a Miele recently and it was shit! I don't understand all the rave reviews. We have a shark anti hair wrap, but for all the long human hair from several of us we don't have pets.

21ZIGGY · 21/11/2025 11:14

I have the miele cat & dog c5 and i think its great.
Bagless are shite. Not a sufficient vaccuum to pull up the hair

YorkshireFelix · 21/11/2025 11:18

I had a Miele for years and it was great, but I changed to a Shark recently as I was spending an absolute fortune on bags for the Miele since we got the dog. The Shark is brilliant, I love it. And I secretly love seeing how much hair and dust it pulls up every time I vacuum!!

Human hair is very different from pet hair. Maybe that's why you don't understand the rave reviews of a pet vacuum from people who actually live with pets 😏

DramaAlpaca · 21/11/2025 13:23

I've an old Miele Cat and Dog C3, still working perfectly and efficiently after four hairy dogs and two cats over the years. It's bagged and corded.

muddyford · 22/11/2025 06:10

I'm on my third Miele, bought just before the EU reduced the power. Mine have all gone up to 2200W. They have all been corded and bagged and cope well with Labrador hair!

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 22/11/2025 06:21

I bought a Miele cat & dog as I have a very fluffy Ragdoll who sheds like crazy. It is useless and I still have to get down on hands and knees to brush the carpet. I have just bought a Shark cordless and it is far better.

Isabelle70 · 22/11/2025 06:24

I am on my second Miele cat and dog after 17 years, great vacuum and a good beater bar head.

hididdlyho · 22/11/2025 08:12

Thanks for all the recommendations, I'll do a bit more research and hopefully can find a bargain in the Black Friday sales.

I do think most vacuums seem a bit shit now they're more eco friendly and less powerful. I've read some people think the newer Mieles are less good, so that makes me a bit wary about getting one. Maybe I just need to get a better robot vac with mapping. I currently have a cheap basic one without mapping, but it's a few years old now and tends to get fixated on doing laps under the dining table!

Have you tried the pet specific head for the Henry? That made all the difference for me. The turbo brush (red) https://www.amazon.co.uk/Universal-Replacement-Numatic-Charles-Cleaning/dp/B0DZHXDKKG/ref=asc_df_B0DZHXDKKG?mcid=a4c9cffc5f02373d8d457bc101ff0fe6&tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=738240712764&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9288738104404040515&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045785&hvtargid=pla-2421096879800&hvocijid=9288738104404040515-B0DZHXDKKG-&hvexpln=0&gad_source=1&th=1

IHeartFridays · 23/11/2025 12:01

I have 2 mieles. Bagged and bag less. Get a model with the turbo bush - it makes a big difference. I’d say both are the same suction wise. My bagless one is a bit heavier. Golden retriever here but I’m going through an appalling hair loss after weight loss at the moment and it’s coping with that as well.

hididdlyho · 23/11/2025 17:45

I have the airo brush for Henry, which is definitely an improvement. It's just the basic red Henry, so maybe upgrading to the pet/commercial model might be a better option.

OP posts:
NotMeNoNo · 23/11/2025 17:52

Try some of the Henry pet attachments first , there is the Airobrush (similar to Miele cat n dog brush) and a smaller brush which is good as it concentrates the suction. https://www.myhenry.com/henrypetkit

Kit is much cheaper than a whole new vacuum.

Most of the Miele hoovers seemed to get rave reviews. Although ours was bagLesa and someone else said they're not as good so maybe that's where I went wrong.

TheWiseAmethyst · 23/11/2025 18:34

As an ex cleaner I was so happy if clients had a Miele cylinder vacuum and the turbo heads are fantastic. Probably about 20 years ago I bought a new Miele 1800 I think from Amazon for £99. I bought a spare turbo brush off eBay. Both are still going strong. I've always hated Dysons. Big clumps of heavy plastic.

Leonberger · 23/11/2025 19:43

Anything but a Henry will just clog up in my experience.

Have you a blaster drier? 5mins of blasting outside daily will change your life if you haven’t!

A Shark works great with my 2 very hairy dogs. Plus the customer service is outstanding. If you call you get through to a UK call centre who put you on a video call and talk you through any issues. Each part can be replaced easily too! This is the one I have

When my Shark stopped working, I phoned them up and it definitely was NOT a UK customer service centre. I could barely understand what the lady was saying. This was disappointing, however they replaced the Shark which has been good so far.

hididdlyho · 23/11/2025 22:40

The Henry seems to have the filter and the Airo brush. It's possibly quite an old vacuum cleaner as MIL was getting rid as it was no longer picking up after her GSD. We're using it at work, so I'll need to get a new vac for our house at some stage.

Unfortunately our dog is very skittish (rescue). She just about tolerates me grooming her, but not a chance she'd let me near her with a blaster drier sadly. I was hoping she'd settle down so I could use a dog grooming vac on her!

I have this, and agree customer service is excellent.
